It would have been fine with me if she had picked a ring out that cost more. I told her to pick out whatever she wanted. That was the one she wanted. Also I had paid for the trip to San Andres as well as the wedding later. That was another bargain. A total of about $2000 for a wedding with 100 guests, open bar, live music, dinner, video of the wedding, photography and limosine. We had the reception in the Laureles barrio of Medellin and it was quite elegant.

"She might have gotten a ring that day but I got the real jewel."

Kudos, congratulations, etc. ... hopefully one day I will be able to post stuff like this here :-)

Colombia is known for Emeralds more then Diamonds. Last year my friend bought a good quality diamond for his fiancee in Bogota and was about 2500.

I understand what are you saying about not wanting to spend a lot on a ring. We all have different feelings here about what we are comfortable spending.

I will say that in my opinion, it will be hard to find "something of quality" under 1000 dollars. I know for example that one diamond store here in Los Angeles list in the paper selling a one carrot solitare for 300 dollars but its a cheap imperfect ugly yellow diamond. It is basically junk which is what you are trying to avoid.

You get what you pay for when it comes to diamonds...and something of quality that is not junk is not going to be dirt cheap.

Good Luck on your search!!!!

Here is my story....I priced rings at Costco Membership store....where I ended up buying it. They had a half carrot diamond VS2  and I for color with a Platinum band for $1700.

I shopped around to many stores and that same size ring and quality would have been about $3000 everywhere else.

Check out Costco or go with someone who is a member.

How do you become a member of Costco?

Hola Sisko,

I'm not sure if they have Costco/PriceClubs back in New Jersey where you live but there are plenty in the West.  They do however have a website (www.costco.com) and you can join via that method with on line purchases available.

Diamonds are cheaper from what I can tell in the U.S. so I bought a loose diamond at dirtcheapdiamonds.com and then purchased the setting at a mall in Cali.  If you go this route, be careful that your diamond isn't exchanged for a fake or cheaper one by the jeweler who places it.  I decided to go to a more reputable jeweler to hopefully avoid this sort of thing.  The setting is more labor intensive than anything so the price is relatively cheap.

If you want a ready made ring then blue nile, sams, costco can be good.
If you want to buy a nice diamond (or a cheap one)_ then go to www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com

Read all about how to select a diamond and then use the pull down menus to price the stone. Read and understand.
You can compare the stone grade per grade with other places.

If you are spending over $1000 then do your homework. Its all on line.

TE AMO PERU!!!

I bought my Colombianita an engagement ring in Jan. when I asked her to marry me while on Vacation in Cartagena. I bought her a $500 preset engagement from Blue Nile. It was 1/3 of carat with a very elegant band. I was nervous at first with buying sight unseen, but the ring was very nice and the quality of the stone was better than something you would pay twice as much for in a typical store. I had picked out a much more expensive ring, but when it came down to this I was trying to balance how much I already spent on my (3 so far)trips and the visa and future trips and her own personal safety. If she gets it stolen no big deal, I already told her that if someone wants it give it to her I will get her another. So I think no matter what your budget I would go with Blue Nile they were helpful and the ring was delivered two hours before my plane left for Bogota.

buy it in Latin America.

Blue nile is over prices compared to what you can get in Colombia for instance.  I can't speak for other countries, but its worth a try.
