While not Colombian....South America really loves American 80's pop music. You will hear it as background music in many restuarants in Cali, Bogota and Lima, Peru.

I've noticed that in Lima, too;  80's "New Wave" music on the taxi drivers' radios.   Maybe it has more to do with the musical tastes of the stations' dj's, rather than that of the populace.

To second the others, salsa is very popular, (from what I know, especially so in Cali and on the coast).  Then there is cumbia, which is kinda like salsa with a faster beat.  There is also something called vallenato.

Then of course there are artists like Juanes and Shakira who are representatives of 'rock en espanol'.  Shakira actually is nothing less than incredible in concert.  Ah, those leather pants...

Shakira is excellent in concert!

I have 4 of her CDs and 2 concert DVD's of her as well as seeing her live in concert. I am going to have to check her site and see when she is coming around again. I've got a 24x36 poster from her concert here in my apartment which I proudly display on my wall. I'll hate to see it find it's way into the closet if I ever get hitched. I left a $700 dollar coffee table top in order to fit my framed artwork (poster) when I moved. (Space was limited)

Carlos Vives "Rock de mi Pueblo" is a great CD.

I dig them both.

BTW, I see you have some experience with Venezuela...  I've been thinking actually to concentrate more on that country lately, although I don't know much about it, or the ladies there (except that there are a tons of incredibly beautiful ones).  I would appreciate if you could share some of your thoughts...

Regarding Shakira, I got one of her really big posters.  Although I did not anticipate getting it how much getting it framed would cost.  But I don't mind...  If I ever let the genie out of a bottle, that argentinian dude will be looking for a new girlfriend Wink

But seriously, I saw the Mongoose tour concert, and it was the best concert I have been to.  There are plenty of cute girls out there who try to sing, but Shakira actually writes the music, performs it superbly, and has a personality (in addition to her looks) - this combination is almost unique out there.

Yeah Shakira is the best!

I actually bought a cheap poster type frame, but I should have it professionally done. Haha! Now you have me thinking.

I got it from "Tour of the Mongoose". I'd have girls over and they would say, "Your place doesn't look like a bachelor's pad?" So I bought that and stuck it on the wall and said "Now it does!" When I last moved, I left everyhting behind but good ol' Shakira. Now my place is a total bachelor's pad. I'm waiting to get hitched before I buy new again.

Anyway, I'll go ahead and and tell you about Venezuela in a new post. Right now, I gotta make some phone calls and would like to give you a good overview of my observation.

Stay tuned...

Yes, Shakira is incredible in concert.

She has a DVD of her "Tour of the Mongoose" which showcases her music well for about $20.

I have seen both Shakira and Juanes in concert several times and enjoyed their shows very much.   I will be going to the Juanes concert later this month as he is currently touring the USA.   I have also seen Carlos Vives, Soraya and Cabas in concert.   These are all very popular artists and are very mainstream.   Most of the ladies I have been with during my travels are all in their late 20's early 30's and enjoy both the traditional sounds of Colombia along with these mainstream artists.   I enjoy listening to Juanes's latest two albumns "mi sangre" and "un dia normal".   Carlos Vives also has a new album out "Rock De mi Pueblo" which I enjoy.   One of my favorites is his "Clasicos De La Provincia" which he does many older traditional favorites... I have burned that CD out.  If you are into the hardcore progressive stuff you might want to check out Neurosis, they are a Colombian Metal band out of Bogota and usually cater to that energenic crowd!

I saw Shakira when she came to Phoenix in January 2003.

Juanes will be here April 30 and I didn't have any idea he was touring the US until you mentioned this.  Thanks.  I definately plan to go.

I am no expert at all on Colombian music but have some impresions.
First there is the traditional salsa. You hear  it everywhere. It sometimes seems like a one music country like it seems a one sport country, soccer 365 days a year and they never get tired of it.To say they are a little stuck in their ways would be an understatement. But it is lively and fun music and they can dance to it all night long. There are traditional singers here and maybe some newer ones.
But to me far more interesting is newer rock and ballads.Shakira and Juanes would be an example.I like Shakira's music, never get tired of it like the never ending salsa.
I went to a fiesta around New Years. My girlfriends cousin has a band. These guys were good!Better than about anything I had heard but Shakira. They did mostly love ballads. There was a guy lead singer who was exceptionsal, sang with lots of emotion. There was a girl singer almost as good.If I had a club I would be wanting to hire them.Exceptional family. The father has an agriculture business, ships peppers to Mexico. The mother and a sister are doctors, then there is this kid with ear rings and rings in his eye brows, but he is  a good musician. And a very nice kid.

Juanez is the big music guy from Colombian.  Anyone there will make sure you know he won 5 Grammys one year.

Good music I must admit.  nice, mellow stuff.

I don't know of any others. But they play rap, reggaeton(spelling), etc, there.  People seem to love Reggae(spelling) there.
