no i dont, but since you are going down there soon, i would advise you to stay away from shopping malls, nice churches and popular discos. my friend says that she feels its going to get a little dangerous with the goverment cracking down on drug production and organized crime, and the rebels are going to target popular places. also, dont go out of the city, no matter if some some good looking girl says its safe.

Shopping malls are well protected, they even have a mirror that they use to check the underside of cars entering the parking area.  I doubt you'll hear of any bombs in Cali, especially at the popular discos.  Most of the valley around Cali is agricultural and is very safe - there are some popular haciendas and stuff like the sugar cane museum are worth checking out.  Now, I could agree with saying avoid being close to police outposts or military installations - those are declared targets and have been for some time.  The elections do bring violence but typically in the smaller towns.

My guess is that you visited the malls before that one, they keep on top of things in the cities.  If I recall they even used the under-chasis mirrors at the "La 14" in southern Cali, you just get used to it after awhile and it's not a big deal.

I know nothing about security or explosives but do you think those mirrors give people a false sense of safety?

Heck, if the terrorists fill bike tubes up with explosives for the infamous "bike bombs" and the drug traffickers are very creative in inserting drugs in any cavity - animate and inanimate - I'd think the bad guys are smarter than strapping a bomb to the bottom of a car like in a Wyle E. Coyote cartoon.

That check really pisses off the taxi drivers.  My point is I guess that in reality - the bombs of the recent year in the major cities (which is just a couple right - 2 Bogota, maybe another one somewhere), have been specifically targeted and not neccessarily terrorist (FARC) related. I know nothing about it either, but I believe the undercarriage check is for the magnetic/remote type that can be attached in a second without the driver knowing.  I think the odds of getting plowed down by some crazed maniac in a restaraunt back in the states is probably higher than getting "bombed" in a Cali mall:)

Aldo,

Come down and have a good time.  Pres. Uribe has been cracking down for quite some time and Cali is relatively safe if you keep your wits about you.  The biggest drama we've had here, (in Cali proper), was last month when some university students were protesting the privatization of Emcali.  Definitely enjoy the parade of ladies at ChipiChape on Fri. night and Sat. afternoon.  As far as going out of the city, there are some safe places, but Cali Vet would be a better source for that than I.  Enjoy, ther's more to Cali than just hanging out at an agency or sitting in your hotel room. -TNC

Here's an online map of Cali:
http://www.paginasamarillas.com/pagamanet/procesos/mapa/a2.asp?cmd=10&ie=391781&V=1172&X=13710.8839878964&Y=19547.3766695954&E=10000

To find somewhere on the map, enter an address in the box labeled "Dirección" and the press the BUSCAR button.
