Colombian Independence Day

To anybody in the San Diego area. Casa Colombia is having a celebration at Balboa Park in the International Cottages area from 11 to 3 today. Lots of food, music and fun.

In the news the other day was the announcement that a $500.000 fine would be charged on the utility bill of any house that doesn't put a Colombia flag in the window from today through August seventh! Some say the rule has since been revoked. Don't know. The kind folks at Siete/Once sold me sheets of red yellow and blue paper for six hundred pesos so I made one and I'm legal.

Today,Sunday 7/20 there is a Colombian Independence day celebration at Coyote point park,just north of San Mateo about 15 miles south of San Francisco.One of my wifes friends from the Colombian Counsolate in San Francisco told her about it.I believe they will be selling food and drinks.
These Colombianas are very proud of their country,even though they did come here.Even after my wife becomes a citizen I bet she will still be refering to Colombia as "my country".In one of her english classes there was a middle eastern guy who was knocking the US.She told him "why don't you go back to your county?" The teacher was shocked she told him that.She explained "l love my country,but I also like it here.If I didn't I would go back to my county."

When I first signed my wife up for English classes years ago, I recall the school administrator commenting, oh, she's from COLOMBIA - when I asked why she heavily accentuated "Colombia" so (my intitial thought was oh great - the drug thing), her response was it's just that all the Colombians they'd had in the school were an extremely proud bunch and got alot of respect from fellow students there.

Speaking of English classes, in Dallas we're fortunate to have several very reputable schools.  I can't say that she learned that much English, but the networking was great.  Not only did she meet other latinas married to gringos here in Big D - but she made friends with some very interesting folks from all over the world that were here on student visas (including some sons/daughters of royalty).  I would have never thought that marrying a Colombiana would result in trips to places like Lebanon!
