Guys, I am going to Peru/ Chile for a month. How much cost have you encountered in South America? What do you think a good amount to bring would be? Excluding hotel due to the fact that I will be with friends. Thanks

I was in Peru for a week in early 2000. I think I spent around 500 dollars that week, that included lots of sightseeing in Lima, lots of resturants, all my transportation [it's very cheap] It did not include my hotel, which was around 40 a night but not that great, just average.
I would think a couple thousand would be enough for a month of eating, sightseeing, etc., probably get by on less than that.

Hey Rob,
I got a fiancee in Lima and was able to a get RT ticket from Minneapolis for $497.00. The cost of things in Peru is real cheap in my estimation. Hotels can range from $20 to 80 a night. The one I stayed in which I would highly recommend was $60.00. Other than that you can get by for 50 a day very easily. You can use any major creit card there and there are many ATM machines too. Hope this helps.

Robbysanjuan, I don't think you'll find much knowegable information on this board about Peru and even less about Chile. I sugest you make your questions very specific and post them on the Lonely Planet site, thorntree forum. However I'll say this: when I go to Colombia I only bring enough dollars to get me through the Miami airport both ways. I get all my cash in Colombia out of ATM machines and I bring two debit cards in case one is lost or stolen. Just stick as much cash as you can in that/those accounts before you go. Without hotel and being tacano my guess is that $500-600 would see you through for the month.

It really depends on the kind of activities you will be involved with and the lifestyle you will be living while in South America.

As an example, are you a guy who likes to eat out at fancy restaurants while on vacation or will your friends be providing your meals also. These kind of choices will determine the amount of money you will need.
