I've found lufthansa and KLM roundtrips chicago to Kiev for  $580 lately.  Pretty good prices if you ask me.

There is a great consolidator in New York.  My agent is Neli Hadjyska at Glavs Travel (neli@glavs.com).  There may be better prices for a specific flight elsewhere, but we never have much flexibility in when we travel, so having an agent who gets you close to the best fare for whichever flight you need is very worthwhile.

Some have had better experiences with Aeroflot than others.  Ours have usually been good.  The biggest plus for us is direct flights to Moscow (for us, from DC, but they also have them from Chicago).

Lateness was a problem the past couple of years, but they have rescheduled the DC flights to leave more time between landing in DC and taking off again for Moscow, which means that a late arrival from Russia does not cost you time leaving.  Because we have friends coming to meet us at the airport, having a reliable arrival time is more critical on the outbound flight than when we are coming home.

If you are not severely restricted by schedule, you can get even cheaper rate through priceline.com. It won't hurt if you give a try.

try travelocity.com - select the radio button for search for best fares rather than the one for specific dates.

Also if you have a Mileage Plus frequent flyer card for United (Star Alliance) you get double the miles to Europe on Lufthansa till sometime in December.

I have found KLM a little pricey for Miami to Kiev. I geuss it's because the one direct flight between Miami and Amsterdam daily fills up quickly.  I have sometimes found flying Fort Lauderdale - Detroit - Amsterdam - Kiev on one leg is cheaper.  I once saved $400 by flying Fort Lauderdale - Detroit - Amsterdam - Kiev - Amsterdam - Detroit  - Fort Lauderdal.  (Fort Lauderdale and Miami are just over 20 miles apart.)

Those prices on Lufthansa sound excellent to me as well.

one time when I was going to Kiev, I took a couple of sleeping pills before getting on the plane.  I fell asleep right after dinner.  The flight attendants woke me up for breakfast only to tell me that they didn't have a diabetic meal as I had ordered and I couldn't eat the sugary crap they did have.  Moral of the story: I'll take the lower fare and skip the crappy meal.

The last time I flew Lufthansa, I didn't know that the quality of their food had declined to the "uneatable" category, so I flew all day without food. My point, is just be forewarned, that you might "fast" during the flight.
I wrote them about the slop they tried to feed us and they wrote back saying they had to make cuts in their service to compete.

.....be nice. I know the grub is bad but I find complaints about food in a thread about cheap airfares somewhat ironic. Remember what you're really getting for your money, you could always take a slow boat over as folks had to in the old days.

Consider you're 7 miles up, going nearly the speed of sound. It's minus 55 degrees outside and if you were exposed to that thin air your time of useful conciousness would be around 5 seconds. Yet you're sitting there warm and reasonably comfortable drinking champagne and eating....well, something. It may seem routine enough to complain about but you're among the first people to live in a time where such marvels are possible.

Very soon, on the morning of December 17, much of America will be watching as a petite female American Airlines captain and a male civil engineer stand in the lee of Kill Devil Hill in Kitty Hawk and flip a coin. The one who wins will climb into a painstakingly created replica of the Wright Flyer and attempt to duplicate to the minute their feat of 100 years ago. Testing reveals this unstable, frail, and underpowered contraption to be nearly impossible to fly. Yet the brothers Wright did so without any experience except a few glider flights, most of which ended in crashes.

These two remarkable men disregarded (and later disproved) all the scientific flight data of their day and went on to achieve what was at the time considered by most to be impossible, while some of the best minds in the world labored in vain to solve the problem. Even the US government with all it's resources failed to best these two determined bicycle mechanics. A study of what lead up to the events of that December morning in 1903 can't help but inspire awe in anyone willing to take the time to learn about it. On that day a dream pursued since the dawn of mankind was at last realized. It would be a mere four decades before man would travel faster than sound, five to see international jet travel for the masses, and only slightly longer before human beings would set foot on the surface of another world.

So have a little perspective please, we've come a very long way in very a short time. You're traveling in hours a distance that in 1903 took a month. I realize I'm biased but try to remember all this the next time you're staring at that mystery meat on your plate. After all, it's not really what you paid for. Forget the food and appreciate where you are and what's happening inches from you, just outside that window. You're experiencing something quite special, something sought after since the first people to walk the Earth gazed up at the birds in both wonder and envy.

In other words, quit yer b*tchin Wink
