Anyone have any recommendations on hotels in yalta near the beach and with a pool?  My girlfriend and i checked with SAM travel agency in Kyiv and I have a case of sticker shock. only the suites had a shower in the room and the prices were quoted per person and just seemed out of line.
Any rec's?

I also used Eugene when I was there last month. We didn't stay in Yalta but there are many small towns that are very nice close by. We stayed in Simeiz which was about a 30 minute microbus ride into Yalta and it was about $1 US for both of us one way. You can look at Eugene's website http://club.cris.net/crimea/ or you can search for AROUND CRIMEA BY CAR. Our flat was $40 a night and they also had a nice hotel in Simiez with a pool for $55 a night. The pool was being refurbished but I think it is done by now. Simiez was very quiet with lots of great places to walk but close enough to run into Yalta whenever we wanted. There are many other towns even closer that look very nice. Check with Eugene, he'll know more about where to go.

Check with apartmentsincrimea.com.The fellow ,Eugene ,was my tour guide and knows that kind of stuff. He did a good job with an apt in Yalta and Sevastopol for me ,although I think we could have done better.I was there in April 03 and was quite pleased.I paid $60/nite for the one I had.It was a 2 bedroom.Different prices in high season(now).Good luck ! cs

Try the Vremena Goda.  It  has a pool and is a short walk to the main beach.  It's "B" suites are close to western standards.  Its cheaper rooms are above average for Ukraine.

Here are a couple of links.

A guy can generally do a little better price wise then what is posted on the web.

The Oreanda is quite nice but as I am sure you have noted is a bit towards the expensive end.  Something to keep in mind is that most of the cheaper hotels will only have hot water from 1700 to about 0900.
