Pravda reports that many yong women from small towns in the Saratov Region seek money and life in the cities by becoming  prostitutes due to unemployment in the region.

http://english.pravda.ru/main/18/90/361/10259_prostitutes.html

I understand that in Russia there is a different attitude towards prostitution but it appears that most of these unfortunate girls are victimized by cruel "gangster" pimps.

Anyone have experience with this region?  Any agencies feature this region?  Just curious.

No real self respecting Russian girl would admit to being a prostitute.  On the other hand, it is common for a pretty girl over there to have a "sponsor", who helps her out financially or who buys them nice presents, in exchange for her occasional company.  Having a sponsor doesn't have much of a stigma, unlike being a prostitute.

It's difficult to estimate how many girls have sponsors or have had them in the past.  The men primarily target teenage girls, probably because they can.  The girls tend to see it as a ticket to get the things that they want, but couldn't afford otherwise.  I would venture to guess that the more household income a girl's family has, the less likely she would be willing to be sponsored.  Unfortunately, the bulk of the population can't afford to be choosy...

I did not mean to imply that prostitution was a socially accepted condition in Russia.

The "sponsor" or "sugar daddy" phenomona I believe has existed as long as society and class distinctions have existed throughout the world.  Those men who can afford them have kept or employed mistresses, escorts, concubines, or in some cultures multiple wives as long as societies have had income inequality.  Most accepted descriptions  suggest that the women in these roles have some choice and depending upon the society some social acceptance.  I seem to recall the appearance and acceptance by the widow of the mistress of a recent French President at his funeral.  The distinction between these categories and prostitutes may be fine but it exists.

The poor girls in the Saratov region as described in the Pravda article I referred to, were lured into sexual servitude and imprisoned by pimps.  They had little choice and were abused.  The article gave the impression though that the desparate economic conditions in Saratov were also driving young girls into voluntary prostitution.

I remain curious as to whether or not any MOB agencies have featured ladies from this depressed region.

Why the papers call it prostitution is beyond me.
The truth is, it is slavery.  The pimps and their
clients should be prosecuted for that.

I agree.  Unfortunately it seems to be increasing and there is very little being done about it.

There is a good dramatization about this evil featured on the new HBO show "Wire."
