Goin' to Ukraine in a couple o dayz

How has everyone been.

My wife and I are finally getting ready for our first trip back to Ukraine since our marriage.  

We are both really excited and really looking forward to it, but something even more interesting will be how our perceptions may change about Ukraine during our visit.

In any case we are just trying to tie up a few loose ends before our trip.  Back at Christmas my wife won a DVD player and we wanted to give this to her family but sad to say that it won't work with their dvd's because of the region coding they put on thier disks.

In any case, lots of things to do to get ready for our trip.

I did see on the home shopping network for $320 a dvd player with little screen which will play both and it was a portable job with NTSC and PAL cables for plugging into the back of those TV's.

I thought $320 was a bit pricey.

Probably cheaper just to buy international VCR with both PAL & NTSC circuitry.

Mine worked in Sevastapol,at my apartment, but I think it was a Japanese player.Most of the CD players I saw in the big dept stores were Japanese so I guess they like the quality and price like we do here.So odds are you will find the same player format as I did,just a guess.

Not sure but my guess is that American CD's will work in European players.

I also have never had a problem playing a russian or ukrainian CD in my CD player but the DVD is another issue.  My guess is that ultimately the US moviemakers were really concerned with piracy of the movies.  I guess the music industry just really doesn't care that much or perhaps it is just the fact that the governments don't want video or image media being so freely intermingled for whatever reason.

Yes they will. Just returned from Kiev and had taken my cd's with me. My fiancee did not have a player so I just bought her a small boom box and they worked fine.

Our last trip over in February showed us a lot of changes.  We went to Zhitomir, where the biggest surprise was the bazaar.  The tents are going away and are being replaced with lockable metal sheds.  That, and they are starting to put some sort of cover over the walkway, to keep it free from rain, snow, ice, etc.  Once they get it done, it will be pretty nice.

Oh, and the cell phone usage over there has exploded.  Marina is looking to get a cheap one.  For her, it's more of a status/fashion issue more than anything.  Still, she's going to shop for a cheap one and give it to her mother when she leaves.  That might be helpful in the future.

Sorry to hear about your DVD dilemma.  The next computer toy I buy will likely be a DVD.  Unlike a standard DVD player, a computer's DVD can be changed from region to region with a registry edit and a reboot.  I will check with the missus to see if she wants to purchase any Russian DVDs.  They'll be easier to bring home than video tapes...

I really don't know what the exact line is, but there are programs out there, like XTEQ, that will allow you to change it.  I don't really don't do much direct registry hacking any more.  I use tweakers like TweakUI, XTEQ, or Windows Configurator to take care of the bulk of my tweaking/security needs.
