Went with my wife to get her Social Security number.  We have now been married for 6 weeks.  We were told that her I-94 number in her passport had still not "cleared" the system yet!
The woman said that since Homeland Secfurity had taken over, it is taking a lot longer.  I asked her how long it might take and all she could tell me was "it could take weeks!".  Also, they are NOT giving out Social Security numbers to children.  I asked her how I was to list my son as a dependent on my taxes next year.  She said that they are only giving SS#s to people who are work authorized.  When I later called the INS (they actually answered on the 4th ring!) the woman told me that yes, it was true they were not giving children socials. If we wanted him to have one, we have to fill out a I-765 (work authorization application) for him as well as my wife..  THat sure makes a lot of sense- fill out a work auth for a 7 year old! ;-)

Just passing the info along..

Later,
Oscar

You only need an SSN if working, otherwise get an ITN from the IRS for tax purposes (for example, with children).  Just go to the IRS website and find the ITN form.

just want a number for tax purposes, get an ITN. But you really should get the kid an SSN via the I-765 approach.
