The reason for a kinder, gentler board is the observance of the maxim by Voltaire.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Yes Voltaire was really something in his time and would still be today.
Mainly because he led an anti-clerical bourgeois group.
In his times,  you did need "family jewels"  to do this.

little sway, unless: Frenchmen, who held property, in 1789,  deserved to die.

He certainly inspired... well, a different vision in '89, than our vision - in '76.

Your "Chilean" comments cleared all doubt upon: which side of the "cold-war" you were on.

So, march on...

Truth is I am on standby for the Gulf, expecting to be flown over anytime. Philosophical and political rhetoric means little to me when I could be coming back in a body bag. I'm no hero and when the fighting starts 99% of us will be shaking like leaves inspite of our firepower.

The soldier who says he has no fear is either reckless or a liar. The brave is a man who inspite of his fear, stands and fights, the coward turns and run.

point, however (I stand by our soldiers -yourself included), I was referring to: "Chile in '73," and your inference to the "dictator."

Yes, evil Augusto (who, btw, saved the finest country in our southern hemisphere - from a complete Communist assault/destruction).

History, 'tis all,

Burke, about Chile, I am totally against communism and against Fidel Castro’s attempt during the past 40 years to export his revolution.  Even though I supported the US backed attempts to restore democracy in S.America e.g. Nicaragua and Panama. I cannot condone Pinochet actions in Chile nor those of the Argentinean Military. What perhaps began as a justified fight against communism soon detiorated into using the same means as their enemies. I am talking about indiscriminate arrests, torture, murder, desaparecidos and basically a totalitarian state. Precisely the things we were trying to prevent in the first case.

During the Cold war the US foreign policy was to stop communism at all cost. This gave us some unlikely ‘allies’ like Suharto of Indonesia, the Shah of Iran etc, we turned a blind eye to these despots. Much of the anti –Americanism around the world today is partially the result of this action. How can we justify ourselves when our ‘allies’ act worse than our enemies?

I am in Qatar at the moment tapping into my laptop. We have our Control and command Centre here. Everyone has a laptop and cell or satellite phone, none of this stuff was around in ’91. All going to planned. Keep good, the best is yet to come.

Honesty counts!

Perhaps, we will have to agree to disagree. At least, in regard to post '73 Chile.

You're correct on the blind despot angle, however (people around the world hate us, why?). My anti-communism has been tempered by the betrayl of former allies: Taiwan, S.A., Chile.. (the talented lads).

I can only draw conclusions from my own experiences in S.A. & Chile -in the mid to late 80's; well-governed (few machine-guns on the steet), stuningly beautiful, clean, safe, prosperous, pristine lands...  to '93 in S.A.. Therefore, I saw a very different world, than the '60 Minutes' version Americans are accustomed to.

Head-up Patriot-

(Odd factoid: General Lebed's (Russian patriot,IMHO) Western favorite - prior to his 'helicopter death.' Well, it was Augusto Pino...

PS. Don't look over Pinochet's recent treatment in Europe; at least, in comparison to the 'martyr's' (Allende)  complete destruction of his own 'Soviet' nation (When the military finally acted... Chile was down to three days of food - subsistence). Well, I was 9 at the time, but I don't recall the CBS story... of the Chillean middle-class hunger/murder lust, that the 'martyr' - slid by the censors.

Funny thing... FOX/Murdoch never speak of such... matters.

America First-

Once again: Keep safe!

I've got a hunch that you're more than a pfc. Take care of yourself over there. And even more importantly take care of the boys under you. What they need now is an officer that will fight smart and do his best for them.
