In the past six years, having changed computer three times.
And having come to the conclusion that it was about that time
once more.
Would dearly love have the opinions   of someone on the board,
please.
In the past having always bought IBM, because they came loaded
with programs, the  likes of Software Selections  (fax, config safe, pc doctor,
Norton,  etc.
Now some advices  I did get.
Go with Dell, services are good.
Gateway, the same.
Have one built to your specifications, parts are easy to replace,
what have you........they have it.

I am asking, because the IBM don't come as loaded anymore and
are the most expensive.
What is very impostant at this time, is to have two Cd slots,
one to read and one as a burner.
Lot of memory RAM,
many slots,  the eternet card to come with the machine,
to hell with loading D Link.
Many more things, also.

What advice would knowledge user  give me.

Thanks.

With the new cd burners, two isn't really necessary. I used to use two myself, but have graduated to one fast one - a 48x burner. You can still burn cd to cd - it saves the data in a cache.

I am a in the computer industry and have been doing this for many years.  So, here is my two cents:

1) Don't go with the newest and fastest CPU.  They want premium for those and you would not notice the speed deference anyway.
2) Tons of memory is always good, especially when you are using XP.
3) You can’t go wrong by going with Dell.

I usually build my own, but then again I do strange things like water cool the CPU.

I just walked a guy through buying a Dell last night with some extra coupons I had.  He got:

Dell 4550
2.4 GHz
256MB DDR 2700
60GB Drive
40X burner
64MB GeForce 4 vid
SB Live Sound
Some cheap Harmon Kardon speakers
18.1" LCD Monitor
Epson 925 Photo Printer
Epson 1260 Scanner
XP Home
Office XP

For $1130 after coupons, discount and printer / scanner rebate.

It can't be had for even less with some patience.

Watch techbargains dot com for the deals and coupon codes
also gotapex dot com
bensbargains dot net
and the hot deals message board at fatwallet dot com

You are correct.  But from the sound of it he does not know how to build a PC.  So, with a pre built PC (such as Dell), he has a big company to hold his hand and provide him support.

What I meant was watch those sites for all the stackable coupons for Dell.  You can get a much better deal from them than just blindy buying off their page.  Most of the extra coupons they offer stack with the "Discount of the Week" that they advertise on the page.

A lot of the deals are from the Dell Small Business side, but no problems buying from there as a consumer.  Just use your name as the business name if you don't have one.  The downside is they charge tax everywhere for Dell SB, the upside is the discounts are much better as well as the coupons.
