My girls little boy (7) had gotten a cold and then it started to move to his chest with a little bronchitis.  He coughed all night!.  She told me that this could last up to a couple of weeks and get worse, she was quite worried.
She told me what they would do at home is give them constant warm milk with honey!  I explained to her that here, we would not give milk or any dairy products at this time as it creates more mucous making things worse.  So I went to the store, got some Sudafed for his drainage, got some expectorant to thin the mucous, making it easier to cough up (lovely! LOL!), and put a cool mister in his room overnight.  He didn't cough once!  He went to school and has been just fine since..

She called her Mother to tell her how we treated it and about the milk suggestion.  Her Mother was very surprised that we would not give milk to a child with a sore throat and or cold/bronchitis! LOL!  

Also, she told me that in her country, they would have given him antibiotics for it.  I told her that antibiotics were no longer given for bronchitis unless a secondary infection started and that antibiotics are to be given very sparingly.  She was again surprised..

So I am the new miracle worker in her family!  LOL!

In old days fishermen in Norway used urine to sterilize wounds. If they cut their finger for example, the pissed on the wound. Urine is antiseptic, so they knew what they did.

Not for inwardly use, only for exterior :-)

I never said anything about Drinking Urine--we call that a Freudian slip. In case you do not understand what that is-since you actually have fantasies about drinking urine, you naturally assume that when some speaks of urine, you erotically conclude Golden Showers in your snaggle toothed, cross eyed face!

I've had some of the same experiences. My Elena got a sour throat and went to a Norwegian doctor. He said she need to let her body cure it , and gave her something against her coughing. Some days go by, and she again went to another Norwegian doctor. He said the same and gave her the same. She waited some days, then she heard it was a Russian doctor here. She went to him and came back with a lot of medicine also some antibiotica. A few days later she felt better and praised the Russian doctor. I tried to tell that she probably would have felt better at this time anyway, but she still believes it was the medicine from the Russian doctor.

I remember being told by a Russain Woman once:

"If you treat a cold, it will be better in 7 days, if you do not, it takes a week."

My wife, btw, wouldn't give milk to anyone for anything, since she doesn't like the stuff.

Sore throats are tea, honey and lemon, with some raspberry added.

Glad you didn't fall into the antibiotics trap, Oscar... many American Doctors hand them out like PEZ Candy... and usually they are just as ineffective...

My Russian wife is the same, she does not always follow the advice of American doctors.

My stepson was diagnosed by the school nurse as needing eye glasses, so off we went to the Optomotrist....
It turns out his eyes were not very good, something that was not picked up while he was in school in Russia.
The prescription was +225...pretty thick lenses and my wife came unglued! She thought there was no way his eyes could be so bad....so she calls Russia to consult with her mother...her mother's remedy?............Vitamins???  As this was told by a "russian" doctor the standard for children with poor vision.

It appears that in Russia there are herbalists that pass them selves off as "doctors" and have natural cures for just about everything. Folk remedy's are the norm, even the medical system there encourage "holistic" cures.

My wife also did not know that she needed glasses until she applied for her drivers license last year...she too takes the vitamins every day.....but so far her eyes have not improved....go figure!

I've also had some strange suggestions to cure illness, one was that I should tie a cloth soaked in vodka around my neck for a sore throat. I dispensed with the cloth added some cola and ice, wonderful! it worked a treat!

As Ken says, it's a device (not expensive at all) that humidifies the air with cool water (as opposed to warm).  It's recommended for things like bronchitis etc..  Being in Utah, which is technically desert, it gets pretty dry here anyway so the mister is a must when ill with such things.

I just thought it was funny that they would give warm milk, which would just create more phlegm!  She told me that even when he went to the hospital once for this, they gave him WARM MILK!!  ;-)
