... in response to Great! I love being amazing!, posted by MarkInTx on Oct 19, 2002

Mark,

I read one of your old posts, where you ask someone..."Do you think he's baiting someone"?

No man, reality check is more like it.  Just tell your boss that you got engaged to a girl from another country after knowing her for a week.  He would probably question your sanity, and reassess if you should be working for him, as should others, as well as yourself.

I have nothing against you, and don't know you.  You are probably a good guy who likes a few beers, a round of golf, a day at the track.

Please try not to be a "professor".  Tell about your experiences that may be of use to others, not about hopes, dreams, and blue sky.

You certainly must have learned things from past mistakes, haven't you?

For a 3rd time....look at the way things really are, as opposed to the way you would like them to be!

Just another Moe.

Well... you are 33% right.

I like a good beer.

Don't play golf...

Never been to the track.

Oh wait... if you ask some of the other guys, they will tell you that you were only 25% right -- I'm not a good guy.

As for being a professor... did you miss that long post where I said:

"...I will say that I am as guilty as anyone of this.

I am shocked when I read that I come off as a "know-it-all". I certainly don't feel that way. I probably should end every post with FWIW, or IMHO... but it becomes redundant. I assume that everyone KNOWS I am simply speaking from my limited experience, and telling you what I believe to be true. "

Guess you missed that, huh?

Yes, I have opinions... yes, I will agrue them passionately. But I always allow others to have their own... as long as I am allowed the freedom to disagree with them... and debate them.

Man, I'm not pissing on your parade, and wish you very well, and hope you wish the same for me.  No fight, no argument, just a dose of reality thrown in.

PS: I'm a terrible golfer, and normally lose at the track, but can hold my own in other situations.

Well that's all I really care about.

When you come through DFW let me know, and I'll by you a beer.

First off, you are correct in that my uncle Al never tried  immigration cases, which are easy.  I was talking about divorce cases!

Trite?  You are trite.  Much of what you write is useless.

I'm very much in this MOB game and is how I found my girl, 2 years ago.  I see it as a wonderful option if done with thoughtfulness and care, and quite a bit of luck....not as a do all end all, only option.

While I wish you great success in your quest, your "head in the sand" free wheeling, long, long odds approach leaves much to be desired from my perspective.  I simply warn against overzealousness, which you seem to have much of.  If this is trite, so be it!  I say keep the love and money separate...unless you have been wiped out and have nothing but a "boat" to offer, which is a much valued prize as well.  If you have nothing to offer but a "boat" then you are relegated to the status of 17 year old high school sweethearts starting out together.

I am a Moe.  Two years in the game, and I'm still a Moe.  I now have no doubt that my girl can "measure up".  I wonder if I can measure up.  Can I be a great Dad to a 7 year old at 50?  Can I accept all the changes that would occur?  Can I handle being #2?  I have come to the realization that to make this succeed, I must be better than the best husband....better than anyone I have ever met.

Over 2 years, I feel we have grown together, shared everything, discussed everything.  She knows I am comfortable, but doesn't know the company I work for, I also own.  Like the line in the Eagles, Hotel California
"I was thinking to myself this could be heaven or this could be hell."

So....as far as me "not having caught fire" yet, probably more so than you.

I've spent years traveling to Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, where over 90% of marriages are arranged.  They seem to succeed, with of course different economic parameters, culture and religion.  There, it is considered wonderful if you marry a first cousin, as he/she would have been known to the families since birth, and there are no surprises.  Our "self matchmaking" process is a little more difficult.

I did start out by reading Irina Petrova, like many here probably did.  Girls with 50's values, only looking for good men which they can't find at home, financial status doesn't matter, loving, cultured, etc, etc.  Too good to be true doesn't begin to describe this BS.

The true pros here are those who have gone before us, have taken the step, have successful marriages, learned, given, suffered, and have come out of this adventure smiling from ear to ear.  You have not.

Do yourself a favor and listen more than you talk, and learn something.  Keep your optimism, but try to give yourself a fighting chance, and leave the pie in the sky stuff to 4 year olds.

...eloquence leaves my acid tongue humbled. ;-)

Btw, your uncle is absolutely correct. In addition to his "massive" experience with FSU girls, your pal in Tx
is also apparently an expert on the USC. Had he read the code he would know the 10 year ball and chain is a valid statue. Enforcement is lacking, but it's legal and on the books.

Lol...maybe the Feds will make an example of him, one can only hope.

Why did you become such an avid critic about guys looking for women in the FSU?  I mean, I guess your heavy posting days were somewhat before my time so I didn't see them but from what I understand, you were looking there a lot.  What happened?  Why so cynical now?

Also, I thought you were now married to a Thai lady, is that right?  If so, are you not under the same responsibilities you think others here are being stupid for undertaking?  Or was your girl already an American?

Just curious..

Excellent post, the longest I have ever read from you!   Thanks for the info.  I understand better now where you are coming from.
It becomes more obvious to me that we have much in common on the issues of allowing emotions to overule intellect..

...lol, I was trying to keep it short. But I've got much more to elaborate about my experiences with these girls when the ball is not in play (so to speak), I didn't touch on that. I'd rather do it off board however.

It'll give you a much greater insight into why I'm always playing the devil's advocate.

Although reality is somber, I agree the odds are longer than the average guy thinks.  Time and money are heavily stacked against the average guy looking for a girl abroad.

A quick recipe for some of that knock your breath away Russian Mustard.  I am sending the recipe as I received it spelling mistakes and all.

            MuSTARD.
100 grammes of a mustard powder, 1 big spoon of sugar,
1/4 tea spoons salt - to fill with 100 grammes of
boiling water.

It is good to stir, if it is necessary to add a little
boiled water. On density she should be as sour cream.
Then to add one big spoon of sunflower oil and one big
spoon 6 % of vinegar. It is good to mix and to put in
glasswares. From above to cover by a piece of bread
(better black). In 4-6 hours to remove bread and to
close mustard by a cover. After 12 hours the mustard
is ready.
Bon appetit.

My in-laws stuffed 2 packages of the dried mix in my luggage, which I hoard jelously - It is, without doubt, the hottest substance I have ever put in my mouth. It also doubles as paint stripper. Think distilled, concentrated Chinese mustard with extra horseradish.

I love it - eat a half-spoonful and you will see God. Wink

Here is a link to the company in Novosibirsk that makes the mustard powder I currently use.

http://www.proxima.ru/

It is all in Russian but translates pretty well with the online translators.  Barry below won't need this though Wink.

The nice thing is you're able to download the price list in excel format. I noticed that they sell nuts with the brand names of "Mustang" and "Robinson Crusoe". I really don't get that, but it's interesting.
