for those who have been to Kiev which hotel would you recommend? I hear both are pretty good & semi cheap price wise. I hear the Dnipro & Rus are expensive & so so.

... in response to Kiev: Lybid or Adria Hotel?, posted by Frank O on Oct 7, 2002

So here's mine. Take it FWIW.

So that you know, I've spent about a quarter of my time in Ukraine dating back to 1998. I have business activities there and have many, many contacts - throughout the country.

I have also stayed at a few of the hotels you mentioned - though I prefer the convenience and space of a private apartment now.

Lybid. It is a renovated (NOT a Soviet-era) hotel that is hugely overpriced (as are nearly ALL hotels in Ukraine) with unbelievably small rooms. Still, they are comfortable and the hotel is extremely close to the train station - if you are traveling by train. I don't care for it because it is too far from Kreschatyk street (central street in downtown Kyiv). As for the hotel not allowing you to take a girl to your room - that is NOT a problem at Lybid.

Adria is OK - but is in the Podil district and also is not walking distance to Kreschatyk. Podil is OK and has quite a few nice restaurants and shops in the area. Rooms are nice and prices are OK - but still around the $100 per night mark.

I would DEFINITELY avoid Hotel Rus - unless you are only there for the nightclub in the basement. Hotel Dnipro is incredibly-expensive and ONLY offers a nice location at one end of Kreschatyk. If cost is no object, then stay at the Hotel Ukraina - recently renovated and the ONLY genuine 5-star hotel in Ukraine. Hotel Imprezza over in Podil is also VERY nice.

Probably the best value if you are ONLY looking for a small bed to sleep until the next leg of your trip - is the hotel near the airport - I believe it is called Hotel Boryspil (original - right?).

If you *do* find yourself at an old Soviet-style hotel - they position babushkas (older, ugly ladies) at each floor that often will hold the key to your room when you leave. They have pretty strict rules about who may be in the hotel. Contact Jack about his little 'trick' to soften those rules some. They work incredibly-well.

Best of luck to you.

Yeah! I really appreciate the advice from everyone. I was checking some of the web pages for booking hotels. They had the Adria at between $57-$70 something per night & the Lybid was around $70-$90. ARe those prices off? I thought at around $60 for the Adria that was pretty good. Have you ever stayed at one of the suites at Lybid? As for girls I only plan on having mine not anyone else with me so obviously that shouldn't be a problem. Kiev does seem pretty expensive at least hotel wise. Then again I plan on being out on the town quite a bit so really I just need it to sleep, shower, & shave.

Dan,

Almost all hotels I stayed at anywhere in Ukraine have floor personnel on each floor to keep the key when you leave.  Also the Hotel Borispol is a very nice hotel and comfortable for the price.

Although like you I prefer an apartment and having the right person to find one for you is important.  When in Kiev I never stay in a hotel.  I hope all is well with you and family.  I am still  waiting for the visa approval from INS like everyone else.  I am on day 106 from the first NOA and even longer from the I-130 filing and NOA.

I think the IBIS checks are causing lots of delays and heaven help you if you get stuck in the meat grinder.  I hope everyone gets their loved one home.  I know I miss my wife very much and if something doesn't break soon I will go back over there and stay for alot longer than the two months last time.  Of course that will take me out of my job now but I can't see throwing away my marriage for a job.
We'll see.

Best Regards,

You shouldn't be paying $60 a night for the time of year you are going.

November, right?

That is off season. You should be able to get a nice flat for $35 a night then... pretty easily.

I paid $35 a night for a flat in downtown Kiev last month.

But -- for Kiev -- you're just talking one night, right? I mean, you're planning on flying in and out the next day to go to Lugansk? For one day, I'd probably do a hotel, too. It makes getting the Visa a little more straight-forward, too.

So, in your case, I probably would do a hotel. Especially if I didn't have a girl meeting me there.

If I did, I would definitely get a flat. Some hotels won't even let you take a girl to your room. And many women won't do it, because it would be assumed that she was a prostitute if anyone saw her. So that makes a diference...

Well...

All I know is that the first time I went, I put in for a private Visa, and it was declined -- no reason why. Then I resubmitted (same paperwork) and it was accepted.

With a hotel, you apply for a Tourist Visa, and I think its a wee bit simpler.

I'm not sure, because I'm still not exactly sure why my Visa was denied the first time. The Embassy never said.

This last time, it should be noted, I got the Private Visa with no problems at all. Maybe I just got someone on a bad day?

Private visa much easier to get than a tourist visa!

If you get a tourist visa you must get confirmation from the hotel you are staying in. Some guys will rent a hotel for one night just to get this Tourist visa, where as the private visa only requires the name and address of an individual (lines 20, 21, 23 of visa appliacation). If anyone needs such name and address I have several I can give out.

I also did a private visa in the Ukraine with no problems.  As for Russia I think that the tourist is the only way to go is this true?  I did a tourist for Russia and cost me about $200 after all was said and done it sucked big time to pay this amount but I have it..  It was about $200 maybe a little cheeper but not much...

Yes Ryan, with regards to Russia the Tourist visa is the way to go. Many guys will stay in a hotel the first night (around $80 unless you stay at a Marriot or Hilton) then go to there flat the next day and spend the remainder of there time there.

A business visa should be given strong consideration if you think you might make a few trips in a years time. The Russian business visa will only be good for one year and is not so difficult to get.

I had many girls who would not meet me at my flat the first couple of dates even WITH my interpreter there!  It's the same as here- "Nice" girls are universal as are "bad" girls.. ;-)
