In a recent news story (on Russian TV) about prostitution in Moscow, it was stated that 75% of the prostitutes in Moscow were from Ukraine and Moldova.

When I went to Kyiv shortly after 9/11 they were still reporting that there had been six airplanes hijacked and that we were going to launch nukes any minute as we had just sent in our troops (DUH, what's wrong with that picture?). Anything to sensationalize the situation.

The sad part is that even after the decades of propaganda and lies from these "official sources", the Slavic people still believe almost everything that they read in the papers or see on TV.

I have had a hard time getting my wife broken of this habit. She got started reading some of the BS posts on other RW boards and I had to keep reminding her that some of these people like to imbelish the truth and others had hidden agendas. It was pretty hairy there for a while until she caught on and decided that it was better to listen to her husband than a bunch of trolls and troublemakers.

... in response to Consider the source..., posted by Rags on Jul 15, 2002

Rags, I had the same problem...my wife was still reading Russian news on the internet. It has taken time, she now reads only our local newspaper...she realizes "now" that what is reported is somewhat secondhand gossip.
One report that comes to mind is when the winter olympics was on t.v., of course she was cheering the russian pair figure skaters...but she admitted the Canadians did a better job without mistakes. The next day she was reading all of the propoganda on the .ru sites...and to see that they were reporting false statements and obvious lies.
My favorite part she read to me was about the Russian cross-country skier who ws not allowed to race because she was suspected of doping...and to see the russian news media getting everyone worked into a frenzy...then to see Putin tell everyone that there was a western conspiracy, to allow her to race anyway! A few days later, we see on local news that the skier had her previous metals taken a way becuase  her bloodwork tested positive for performance drugs that were so new they were not on the banned substance list yet.

Now my wife does not even read those sites anymore...she now considers that source one-sided and self centered, just like the old days of the USSR.

It's not like OUR newspapers are a bastion of truth, ya know...

You don't suppose that The Washington Post (fondly referred to as Pravda on the Potomic) has ever embellished stories to sell papers do you?

Or, that maybe some papers have -gasp!- a politcal agenda...Huh

If tou can read russian...try looking at few .ru web sites, you will not believe what you see! Try doing a word search on some subject you feel you have good knowledge of...and then sit back and read endless crap.

Take a look at rambler.ru   very entertaining...

Mark,
I tell Lena to consider the Russian news. Then consider the US news.  The "truth" is somewhere in between.  LOL.

Nothing wrong with that.
Did you know that when a broad is not a virgin anymore,  after she popped her cherry, she is a 3/4 hooker,
no matter where she comes from, countries, races, religions or what have you.
They say that,  if every cockhold in the world had a bell around his neck,  you could not hear yourself talk
anywhere.

A buddy of mine was taken out by some of his co-workers while working in Korea temporarily and the hookers there were from somewhere in the FSU.  I think there's been quite a few women who've either escaped poverty this way or were tricked into it by dirtbags.  They seem to be pretty wide-spread.

I've also heard that there's quite a few Colombian prostitutes in Spain.  Poverty creates deperation and fuels prostitution.  I feel sorry for these women.  I have no idea what percentage of them are in it voluntarily, but what a horrible thing for those who were trapped into it somehow.

It's the same story in many countries and must be understood that many of the women who prostitute don't want their friend and family to know what they are doing or want to keep their activities away from where they live.  In Iceland, many are from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.  There used to be many from Russia and Ukraine, but visa restrictions have cut back on their availability.  The come here for a month, then travel to another location if they are contracted to do so.  Many do it out of economical necessity, but of course I am not justifying their choice. The military sailors here do have much to say about the beauty of these slavic ladies as something to behold.  It's not only the beauty of these women, but it's the charm and attractiveness that set them apart from many other cultures.  My 1 1/2 cents worth.

And in Singapore they all come from Malaysia.

And in Malaysia, they all come from Indonesia.

And in Germany, they all come from Turkey.

Thailand is the exception --smile--.

I cannot count the number of times I've seen newspaper reports and/or television accounts that ALWAYS suggest the preponderance of prostitutes originate from some other country. It is a rather blatant form of nationalism coupled with elitism - IMHO.

The other apparent 'truism' is that countries in the Northern Hemisphere always seem to make jokes and accuse their southern neighbors of being lazy. America to Mexico - Central Europe to Spain, etc.

Seems that people will always find some 'reason' to make accusations toward others in a feeble attempt to feel better about themselves. Sad.

Dan I agree with you totally, however, since intelligent people also get involved in this simple way of self elevating, they usually look at some facts. I mean you have to admit that once you cross the border from US soil to Mexico the whole world changes. I mean how can there be such a difference? What is that all about. It may just be values.

Now I am not putting Mexico down. I suspect (no data to suport however) that Mexican people are more down to earth and friendly than Americans and may have a better family social structure.

I dated a Mexican girl once.

She LOVED mexico... though, of course, she lived in California.

She was always telling me how peaceful it was being in Mexico. How it was no pressure, and everyone was laid back and easy going. She loved going there every chance she got.

It was a perfect place, she thought.

Of course, the roads were bad, she would say. And you couldn't get a decent job... and the cities didn't have the stores and buildings... etc, etc...

I asked her once: "Do you think the reason that Mexico has none of these things, and America does has anything to do with the fact that everyone is so laid back in Mexico?"

She looked at me like I was out of my mind.

So then I asked: "Well... then why has America prospered so greatly, and Mexico has not?"

She seemed to think it was because America has more oil...

That news didn't happen to be put out by Moscow television... did it?

I was watching a show on Vegas last night... they said that 90% of all prostitutes came in from somewhere else, too...

Hmmmm....
