Hello all. Going to Ukraine for the third time in March. I will be visiting Kate in Odessa. This will be a longer trip so we will be going to Kiev for 5 days. I did some research and found an apartment within view of the city center for $30 a day. Kate also tells that whenever her brother goes into Kiev to visit he stays at a hotel for about $10 a night. I am sure this is not a Hyatt, but a hotel that is made up in grand common Ukraine style.

When I mentioned about the apartment, she explained to me she would rather save the money and stay at the hotel. She prides herself in being economical. I do not mind paying the rent for the apartment, but if it is important for her to stay in the hotel then I will do that. I like new experiences and staying in a local hotel will be one I remember.

My question is this. Has anyone else stayed at a Hotel in Kiev for $10 a night? What is to be expected? I can not imagine what the hotel room would be like, but it is good enough for Kate and her family when they visit. I am not a very particular guy so I will not mind having 'comforts'.  

Anyone else have any comments or thoughts to share about this?

When I wnet to St. Petersburg, Maria told me that she was glad I was staying in an apartment. She would NOT have been willing to come to visit me if I were in a hotel, because everyone would have assumed that she was a prostitute.

I have heard that from several women...

I've been told exactly the same thing.  When I brought back a lady to my hotel one time, the security men gave me a hard time about it.  I guess that was a good sign because I'm told that hotels have agreements with certain prostitutes that they can come in with no trouble.  Prostitutes tend to hang out in front of the hotels or in the bars.  I am blind to that kind of thing of course.  Haven't been around much.

it is considered a open invitation for "business" if you go into your room and leave the door ajar. In most cases the floor lady or monitor will alert the girls if there seems to be a prospect-----heck I've had the phone to ring before I got the door closed at the Rossiya.
And about the stigma, I have had women who would not come within a block of a hotel----even to the extent of standing in the freezing cold rain to keep from being seen near the hotels.

Maybe that's why European Connections used a St Pete hotel in such a lousy location.  So the women wouldn't be see there.  What sucks is that hotels have nice things like restaurants, ATMs, currency exchanges, better location, etc.  Us guys leave our hotel doors ajar all the time but we weren't expecting prostitutes to walk in.

Trust me, $ was the deciding factor on their hotel choices, they even started having their socials onboard the hotel-ship in Odessa before it sat sail---it had it's own in-house brothel.
I didn't know about the door being ajar being a open invitation either, until a very pissed-off working girl who just happened to speak English very well explained it to one of my friends as he was trying to get her to leave.
When did you go on a EC tour? Who was running the show?

I went to St Pete in 99 and Riga in 01.  The son and nephew ran the show in St Pete and the dad ran it in Riga.  I talked to them a lot on those trips.  I may go to Ukraine this spring.

Same here. In my early days when I stayed at hotels many ladies would not meet me there as they were ashamed to been seen there as people would think they were not nice girls. A few times when ladies did meet me at the hotel they were questioned very rudely by the doormen.

"She prides herself in being economical."  good quality.

If this is a women you have feelings for, and she is:
a)  offering advice in her own Country,
b) offering to save you a litle money in the same token,  
c)  it will give her a feeling of contributing ( pride)
If you know of anyone who has been there,and it is o.k. place, I  say why not give it a go???  and try her suggesstion of the hotel Huh

I don't know about the hotel she is refering to, but a few years ago one of my friends in Kiev made reservations for a room in a hotel near her apartment and the cost per night was supposed to be $15 per night. My friend picked me up at the airport, took me to the hotel and as I was checking in the rate suddenly jumped to $70. Tired from the trip, I paid the deposit of three days at that rate and proceded to my room-----I was told that this hotel was average for Ukraine in the quality of the room, it in fact was much better than the newly remodeled rooms in the Kievskya Rus which I had paid $85 for a few years before, it was several subway stops and a 15 minute walk from the Kreshatic, but the rooms were larger, a bit aged, but clean and the water was hot. After a call from my friend's sister, who just happened to work in the tax assessor's office for that district and who was the one who made the reservation in the first place, the rate suddenly became $15 again;)

That may take a little research on my part to find the reciept, as I do not recall the name of the hotel-----now that may sound a little silly, but at that time there was not a soul that worked there who understood English well enough to communicate with nor were there any signs,brochures,etc. in English to be found (if you are interested, I'll try to find it or E-mail my friend and ask what the name is). Also the hotel doors were locked at midnight and if there wasn't anyone in the lobby, well you might have to stand outside until someone came around. The "foreigner rate" at that time was $70 and if it had not been for my friend that is what I would have had to pay. My main reason for staying there is because it was close to my friends' apartment and as it was the open jaw segment of my trip, I wanted to spend as much time with them as I could. I had no problems with this hotel other than the price gouging, but you can expect that once they realize you are a American, so I wouldn't count on a great rate or Hyatt quality either (more like Motel 6 with "live" entertainment).
The Rus is beside the soccer stadium and has been under renovation for several years now-----very small rooms, 3/3 bed against the wall, hot and cold running hookers anytime after dark (as in most hotels in The FSU), expect a phone call between 11PM and 3AM or within 5 minutes of your return to your room. In most cases the doorman will give any woman, other than the working girls, a hard time if you try to take her to your room without paying for her overnight stay-----no matter how long you intend to stay there. At last account that I knew, the rooms at the Rus were around $100 per night (single occupancy) and that was nearly three years ago.
The best bet is to get hooked up with a decent apartment.
