It is now 8:00 a.m. eastern time here in USA.
On cinemax MMAX on Directv channel 513 is a great russian movie on called East-West.  Looks like it was set during WWII and maybe set in St. Petersburg.  Pretty good movie and you can practice your russian comprehension.  Gives some ideas about how the people lived under the old communist system.

I don't know where it was filmed, but I believe the actual historical event depicted in the movie was the Russian defense of Stalingrad, now called Volgograd. A Great movie!!

You might be thinking of "Enemy at the Gate".  Oatmeal is talking about "East-West", a Russian-French film set during Stalinist times in Kiev.  Filmed in Ukraine, Bulgaria, and France.  Highly recommended.

Been there! I relate....but the way they squeezed people into apartment is really something.

When I walk around and look at some of those old buildings along the back alley ways in downtown area, kinda creepy...but majestic as well.  If those walls could talk and they would tell a tale.
