I'll be heading to Colombia next week to spend a few days with a girl I met in Bogota while I was there in June. We're planning to go to Cartegena for a long weekend over Labor day. I know some of you know Cartegena really well- and this will be my first visit to that City. Any suggestions on great places to take a date, such as romantic hotels, romantic restaurants, places to see and things to do? I appreciate your advice!

and head for the old walled city.  Let me know what you want to spend and I will be glad to recommend some hotels that will be just what you want.  Too bad you will miss the full moon on the 18.  NO place is more romantic than watching a full moon come up out of the Caribbean while standing on the wall that surrounds the Old City.  For a long weekend you can afford to splurge.  For starters consider the Hostel San Diego, Calle de las Bóvedas, a block from the Santa Teresa. Double $135.000 pesos including taxes and breafast.

Way expensive but probably the MOST romantic place I have ever stayed.  The Agua, Barrero Centro, Calle Ayos No. 4-29.  Stayed here twice but only for two nights each time because of the cost.  Once on our anniversary and once on Mrs. Gator's (no her first name is not Ali) birthday.  About $500.000 pesos a night including breakfast and taxes.

Club Pesca is a very nice seafood restaurant on the water near the yatch harbor just south of the old city, taxi drivers will know.
The Plaza Santo Domingo is the biggest plaza in the old city. There are several outdoor restaurants and wandering musicians who will sing for you.I went there 5 nights in a row my first trip to Cartagena last year.
Inotecha is a very good restaurant in an old mansion in the Old  City. Its more formal upstairs.
Hotelwise I have stayed at the Almarante, overpriced and not on the beach,Las Americas which I liked, very nice  but way out by the airport and Las Vellas, right on the beach in Bocogrande but in need of redecoration, but good price,130,000 a night.Someone else can probably recommend a more romantic choice.

El Popa is an old church (now a museum) on the top of a mountain that overlooks Cartegena. Awesome views of the city. I would recommend doing this first because it gives you an idea of the basic layout of Cartegena. There are also interesting artifacts in the museum.

There is an old castle there in Cartegena, although it doesn't look like a typical castle. It was more of a hiding place for soldiers when Cartegena was under attack. Lots of history there and seemingly endless tunnels. It is very large and conspicuous- everyone in Cartegena knows where it is. You can't drive thru the city without getting a glimpse of it.

I am no expert on Cartegena restaurants but DEFINATELY take her on a horse carriage ride along the shores. She will love it. The views are spectacualar.

Have fun!

Bill,

Hotel Decameron is really a nice "all-included" option.
Great food,nice pool,live entertainment and a disco.
All the rooms have great views of the ocean and The Old City.
The rooms with balconies are particularly romantic.
Enjoyable activities include the Chiva Bus, Mr. Babillas disco, the city tour, the horse drawn carriages and the boat rides out to the nearby islands.

Have a great time,
Cabo
