From a good friend :-)

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the

1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cellphones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and  the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

or at least find a working Slip 'n Slide on a hot day, get out an old Spud Gun and have a war with your buddies or tease the dog or kitty with a Whamo Air-Blaster.

Good post Hoda, you too Jimmy!

Hoda, you forgot one important thing. If we got out of line when we were kids, the closest neighbor would smack us and then call our parents who would also smack us when we arrived home!!!

Child abuse!
You can't hit the lille f--ker anymore regardless of what he does. And he can graduate from school knowing just about nothing.Wouldn't want to hurt his self immage with the truth.

god forbid the kid would have to take responsiblity for his actions!!!! I'll tell you what, after getting a smack on my butt for getting out of line, I would usually think twice about doing it again for the most part...sometimes I was a bit slow ...usually a second treatment cured me!

Pete,

I sure remember the "look" but I also remember thinking that I could get away with something and never get caught...guess what??? My dad was a whole lot smarter than I gave him credit for at the time.  My father rarely smacked me in the butt...but I still remember the times when he did!!!! My parents were kinda strict...but I think I turned out ok. (except for my latina obsession!!!) Lots of kids I grew up with are either dead or in jail. So the folks knew what they were doing.

Hoda,
That was good.Did you write it or find it somewhere?
The only real risk was the smoking to the adults or the drinking if they oveddid it.I have outlived my father and all my blood relative uncles. They all smoked. The oldest made it to 58.If second hand smoke was that dangerous I would be dead, although it may have contributed to alot of sinus problems I had as a kid.
I had my first BB gun at 3.But I didn't get to go roaming around with it untill I was 6.Got my first real gun at 9 but never went postal on anybody.Actually I wish in hindsight we had other diversions except killing animals for fun,but that was how it was when I was a kid in Idaho.
In Idaho you could drive at 14.My 14th birthday was the biggest day of my life.I had a car at 14.I remember reading you had to be 18 in New York and thought wow, thats real old.Except you could drink in New York at 18.We couldn't go it in most bars untill we were 20 but it was never much trouble getting ahold of beer. There were no other drugs at   all
around there and then.Alot of us got our girlfriends pregnant early and most of us married them. Not real smart, but there was not alot else to do.Kind of get in the car and head for the ditchbank or Orchard, like in "night moves" by Bob Seeger."I worked for a guy with an orchard,he would get pissed off when kids looking for a place to park would drive in to his orchard and smash his aluminum sprinkler pipes flat.I majored in girls and cars in high school but also worked 20-30 hours a week.Never did get serious about studying untill I went to College after working 2 years in a sawmill. Then I got strait A's in college. In high school I got C's but never cracked a book. But everybody could read and write or they wouldn't dream of graduating you or  even pass you in to 3rd grade.
Alot of people who didn't leave town turned in to alcohics, out of boredom I think in a town of 3000 people.
I went to college then just got in my car and headed to California.I got a job my 3rd day there.I always had a job from the time I was 16 untill my car business went under at 50 and I didn't go back to work for 4 months. One thing that taught me was I was going to survive regardless. It was an eye opener for a guy who had had alot of money and then lost it.Out of respect for my own lazyness and carelessness with money I decided I better go back and get that pension.I needed something even I couldn't screw up.I didn't want to wake up broke again  at 60.
When I was younger it seemed I was always the youngest guy working every place I worked. Now it seems like I am the oldest I associate with. Some off my friends are younger than my son,but he is only 18 years younger than me.Everybody I have dated for 20 years has been younger than him.My ex 5 years younger, one current girlfrind 14 years younger than him.But screw the numbers, untill they catch up with you and you die I guess. But with my currious mind and the imformation age I expect to outlive anybody in my family before. Its amazing what most doctors seem to not  know.
Thats my rant.

Hoda,

That was an interesting and enjoyable trip down memory lane.  My situation was very similar, except for the part about my mother smoking and/or drinking.  Neither parent does that and neither do I.  We all have our childhood memories, both good and bad.  It certainly seemed to be a simpler time than now.
