... in response to rookie, posted by colman on Dec 25, 2002

Hello forum, I am a Colombian American male living in the great city of Chicago. Last time I vacationed in Colombia was in August/Sep. of 1998. My parents, brother and I went to Pereira(Risaralda) and Ibague(Tolima). I speak Spanish--el dicho es que uno le saluda a una muchacha en Pereira y ya anda en la cama con uno---lol--loosely translated- the saying says if you greet a girl Pereira she already goes to bed with you--no harm taken or given for the most part, Colombia has regional pride and sometimes it presents itself uninvited. I have been a sporatic fan of this forum and have found it to be informative and interesting for the most part. I look forward to sharing thougts, cultural differnces and great ideas on the subject matter--Colman

Hello Finagaroll5, sure, I would be glad to offer any information that you would wish to know about. For starters, the reason I visited Pereira and Ibague is because my father is from Ibague and my mother is from Pereira.  Well about Pereira--they have recented erected a bridge connecting Pereira to "Dos Quebradas", a growing sister-city of Pereira--they call it el "viaducto"--pretty modern, relatively speaking.  My father is full of pride with Ibague, Tolima--every Spanish-speaking friend of mine usually goes through one of his "orgullo" episodes.  For instance, Tolima is considered Colombia's official music "departamento". At first I didn't really like listening to this music but after investing time deciphering the words-I must say, I love it--Bambuco, San Juanero, played by the "tiple"(authentic Colombian guitar from Tolima) are some of the styles. Well--Ibague-if I can compare to the U.S. is like a very laid back, southern state--beautiful people--and the women are more or less reluctant to leave it, its a very proud people. Pereira is a very lively city. A city with many internal immigrants--its closer to Cali-but not to wild. Pereira was part of Antioqua department--the capital being Medellin--so it has more of that "paisa" mentality--I found the women there to be extremely beautiful--well I have written a loadful, I go to this forum about 3 times a week-so I will answer any of your questions honestly and to the best of my ability.  Colman

I didn't ask the question but I sure enjoyed your informative answer. I made a day trip once to Pereira from Manizales but we only went to the zoo. Anyway thanks for a really interesting and well informed post.

Hello, yes I know that zoo, its right by the airport.  A modest zoo compared to Lincoln Park and Brookfield (Chicago) but its a nice place to go with a young lady. One thing though, I remember they did have sort of a taxiderm(sp?)/wax museum with stuffed animals that seemed alive! Its very small but interesting, it did not have any cosmetic touch-ups done to accomodate sensitive visitors-lol--but I liked it. A great restaurant in Pereira is located at a mountain top that overlooks the city, I forgot the name but uncle called it el "dedo"-lol-meaning finger because once up there it, you cant help but point out to the city with your guest/s. I think its called el Mirador. Its top-notch and an elegant dinner for two will set you back about $70-85 American dollars, this was in 1998.--Colman

Good god! You scare me with that dinner price, almost 200.000 pesos?! Me I'll dine in the vally. I didn't see that wax museum. The zoo I went to was laid out on a gently sloping hillside with a view off into the distance. Same place? I wonder if the taxidermy part is new. I was there in '96. Anyhow nice story about El Dedo. I remember on the bus ride back to Manizales it rained like h*ll and the bus leaked. I got drenched but didn't care.

You might want to check this out.  Looks like a great location.  I think the mountain view is about 50 bucks a night with the city view being more expensive.
