You're right, it *should* be service first.  Unfortunately, it's not service first with many who join the reserves.  I will never forget a comment made by the wife of a reservist who had been called up during the first gulf war in 1991: "He never wanted to fight in a war. It was just a second job to him."

I respect people like you, MtMav and Cold Warrior, who do put service first.

We are on call 24/7 for call up... They don't activate by units, but by person.

I have a friend who had to get out of the navy after 20 years of reseve time - because of high year tenure, a dumb navy rule, to ensure upward advancement for all.

So he joined the Army Guard to continue his military service and draw a paycheck, the very month he was signed up he was activated and last I heard he was at Ft.Campbell waiting to ship out for Kuwait - anyway he said over 3/4 of the Army Guard Unit was so out of shape they had sending guys home.

Seems their is alot of pencil whipping going on in the Army units.

My friend said when he gets back he's going to get out of the Army Guard and rejoin the navy in a NON-paying role, but will continue to get retirement points so that when he retires he'll have a bigger paycheck... YES.

It is all about MONEY!
---
It's like me, I have to drive 100 miles one way to go the Navy Reserve Center.  I could have easily joined the Army Guard in my town, but I prefer to work on fighter jets.
I tellya it's a helluva a feeling to be sitting in the front seat of a F14 or a F18 with the engines turning.

I chuckled about hearing my friend complain about living in a large circus like tent, in the NR they puts us up in a Motel... I can't image what's it's like to be in the guard on a hot summer day!!!  Guess, I'll just have to kick back and turn up the A/C for them!! lol.

is very similar to my own. I'm an only child, however, I was grateful to have a small family with values poured into my head.

She, Mom, slept on the couch; so I felt 'normal' goin' to school at six.

One can't replicate values.

Can they?

Bless you, lad!

America First, 2nd & 3rd (for the American kids there).

My mom lives in Oceanside (Pendleton), and has been helping the military wive's there, since the build-up.

Despite my views on this war: 'military women,' in San Diego, are safe; and, yes: well fed!

Your babble makes me miss Yoe: I think?

Well...

Might you enjoy:  a conservative-American version of the harm done to the Russian diplomatic corps, in Iraq?

The D.T, is beyond reproach - hehehe - so, I doubt it!

Opps, I forgot - you've not read Gibbon, Acton nor Washington - apparently. Sorry!
