In today's Miami Neuvo Herald, the Spanish version of the Miami Herald, there is an article titled "Colombia exporta espouses" (Colombia exports spouses).

In the print version it is on the front page, and includes 3 pictures, one of myself and my wife Zulma, one of Claudia Amaya, general manager of LAI, and a third of a another Colombian/American couple living in Minnesota.

The article is also featured in the online version of the newspaper.  It only contains the picture of the Colombian/American couple living in Minnesota.  Here are links to the original Spanish version and the google translation.

The article seems fairly balanced with some truth and a bit of the typical journalistic exaggeration.  The very last paragraph contains a supposed quote from my wife, which I feel is unflattering and which she didn't say and I don't think it even represents her attitude, but as I said, there is a bit of jounalistic license in the article.

Fairly nice article, too bad we didn't get to see your pictures in the on-line version. The Irish had a saying (although they were refering to their university graduates who sought work abroad, not their MOB industry) "Our best assest is our best export."

The biggest exageration I saw was that the women pay $80. In Cali with a few exceptions they pay nothing. The only agency I ever heard of charging them is Latin Best and she only charges the girls about $12.

I also think that most guys who have met a number of calenas will agree that plenty are NOT content with just "sincerity and sensitivity" as the article states and are in fact just as materialistic when given the opportunity as any gringa. It's just that most, untill they hook up with a gringo haven't had the option.

She was formerly a member of Latin Connections although she wasn't when we met. I was with the group from the intro service and she had been invited to join all of us at a disco by the office manager.

She didn't have to pay to join (she is very attractive) but she said some of the girls had to pay 30,000 CDP (about $15 at the time) for membership and photos.

Some of the girls only go to the intro services as a joke. Many have boyfriends but want a night out on the town or maybe a shopping trip. Some will take whatever they can get from the guy. My wife first went there with 4 other girls. One of them had seen an ad in the newspaper and had to pursuade the others to go. Three of the five are now married to Americans and living in the US. One was married but is now divorced. She would be glassified as the type who needs the 'bright lights' and big-city action.

But there are many sincere and serious women who have had enough of the B.S. and macho young Colombian guys. Or they have been married or in relationships and they guys either are rough with them or cheat on them.

One thing I have come to learn is that most of the girls/women who join the intro services are looking for a better life and want to meat one honest, faithful and loving man.

The extras like a decent job and clean habits are also plusses.

One thing my wife definitely did NOT like was a guy starting their introduction off by showing her photos of his house, boat, car, horse, etc 'back home'. She was not just uninterested in these materialistic items but actually turned off by his approach. She felt like he was trying to impress her and buy her affection. With some girls this might work but are those really the type you want to marry?

As for the dress while visiting Cali. What others have posted will work. Dockers or slacks and long-sleeve shirts, especially at night, when going out to dinner or discos. Cali has plenty of each.

Keep in mind one thing I learned when traveling. In most countries only young boys where shorts away from the beach. I have worn nice shorts in Cali but I wouldn't recommend it for first meetings. My wife told me of a guy she saw at the intro service office. He wore his shorts all day, everyday, even to the disco with a group. Not a good impression.

She also told me of meeting guys who didn't bath or their breath was so bad she couldn't stand to talk to them, even though they were nice guys.

If you're going to spend your time and money to go to another country to meet a woman at least try to make a good impression.

My wife, who used LAI in Bogota, paid about $50.
