Voluntary crucifixion will exonerate erring CL cops

By Mark Louie P. Roxas, Central Luzon Bureau

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga: The administrative charges against erring Central Luzon policemen will be dropped if they perform penance in this camp on Holy Thursday to show their penitence at their wrongdoing.

Chief Supt Rowland Albano, the Central Luzon regional police chief, said at least 20 erring policemen who are absent without leave (AWOL) can be exonerated if they carry wooden crosses in a penitential procession around the camp.

But those with more serious offenses will have to submit themselves to crucifixion.

“I am not asking them to do this compulsorily,” Albano said. “But if they wish to be cleared of their AWOL charges, this is the right time to do it.”

While he is willing to exonerate penitent Central Luzon policemen who have been AWOL for a short period if they join the penitential procession, those who have been AWOL for at least 120 days will be asked to submit themselves to crucifixion.

AWOL policemen who would agree to Albanos’ unique punishment will wear their PNP uniforms and their faces covered with pieces of black cloth to conceal their identities as is the practice in other places in the country.

Albano said that the reenactment of the crucifixion will also includes the whipping of the backs of the AWOL personnel by personnel of the Regional Human Resources and Development (RHRD) office.

The other highlight will be the dramatization of the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) where Insp. Joan Ponseca, the public information office chief, will play the role of Mary Magdalene.

Albano has instructed Senior Supt. Gil Pacia, the chief of RHRD, to submit the list of AWOL policemen who have agreed to undergo the Holy Thursday punishment.

The dramatization of the passion of the Christ by the AWOL personnel will start at 12 noon at the Camp Olivas chapel and end at the chapel for a kilometer walk.
