hi everyone! i was just wondering if its a good idea to get a passport before me and my fiancee get married? A lot of people told me it isn't since we are planning to have our wedding here in the philippines. Is it better to do it before the wedding? Wont it be a cause of delay in time we will apply k-3?

Hi yan,

Unless you are planning a trip overseas before the wedding, wait until after you are married to apply for your passport. You will want it in your married name when you apply for your visa, so if you got it now you would only have to replace it later anyway.

It normally takes about 6-7 days to get a passport, so it won’t cause any delays in processing your visa. Get your NSO birth certificate (3-4 copies) now if you want so you will be ready to apply for the passport. You will also need a certified copy of your marriage certificate for the passport application. Bring photocopies along with original documents so you can keep the originals.

The DFA will probably have you complete the CFO seminar before they issue you your passport.

Yan,

If your reason for applying for a passport, either original or replacement, is because you are married to or will marry a foreigner and emigrate overseas, then they are supposed to require the CFO seminar first. After we married in the Phils and my wife went to DFA to change the name in her passport to her married name, they made her take the CFO first and then issued a replacement passport under her new name.

If you tell them that you only want a passport to travel temporarily on a visitor visa, they probably won’t require you to attend CFO first. However, before you can get on the plane with a fiancée or spouse visa, you will still need the CFO sticker in your passport. So you’ll still need to complete the seminar once before you leave anyway.
