I did Pimsleur + Rosetta Stone + work through a textbook and did OK when I went to Moscow... I could get around OK, ask directions, buy things OK, argue with the dumbass customs people at the airport, etc...
I would say that Pimsleur helped me the most, but Rosetta stone was great for giving me a lot of vocabulary.
Eventually you'll need to knuckle down and buy a book that will teach you grammar. It's not as much fun as Rosetta/Pimsleur and you don't need to do it at the beginning... but eventually you'll get to a point that you need to study plain ol' grammar.
