I was just e-mailed this by the owner of an agency I used at one time. Doesn't pertain to me but I thought some of you might like to see it.

Today we became aware a new bill to be voted on, on Friday of this
coming week. It applies to citizens of the state of Washington, in the
USA, but if passed will probably be extended to cover many other US
states. The bill is backed by a small group of women's rights activists
and seeks to prevent agencies from supplying contact information of
foreign ladies, to men from the US. The bill will require each male
client to go to the police station, be finger printed, and a background
check done on them. We would then have to provide these details to the
lady, prior to you being given her contact details.

Along with a number of other agencies, we intend to challenge this bill
when it is presented on Friday. We would like any of our clients who
live in the US, and especially those that live in the state of
Washington to contact their senators no later than Wed. of next week as
the vote will be on Friday. Please inform your Senator that you do not
wish this bill to pass. Senators in the USA listen very very closely to
public opinion so it is extremely important that this is heard from as
many different people as possible.

If this bill is passed, then you may well find that the service we are
able to provide to clients from the state of Washington will have to be
restricted, and I'm sure soon afterwards, the services we can provide to
many of the other US states. A complete list of Senators for Washington
State is listed at the bottom of this page. Letters to the Senators may
be too slow in getting there so please either call or email them to
prevent this daft law from being passed.

The details of the bill proposed are shown below

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Currently in the Washington State Legislature there is a proposed bill #
6412. You may read this bill in its entirety by going to www.leg.wa.gov
and entering 6412 in the blank provided for the bill number.

The digest on the bill reads:
SB 6412 - DIGEST
Requires each international matchmaking organization doing business in
Washington state to disseminate to a recruit, upon recruitment, state
and federal background check information and marital status information
relating to any Washington state resident about whom any information is
provided to the recruit, in the recruit's native language. Provides that
each Washington resident before receiving any services from an
international matchmaking organization shall obtain from the state
patrol and provide to the organization the complete transcript of any
background check information provided pursuant to RCW 43.43.760 based on
a submission of fingerprint impressions and provided pursuant to RCW
43.43.838 and shall provide to the organization information concerning
the person's current marital status. Does not apply to a traditional
matchmaking organization of a religious nature that otherwise operates
in compliance with the laws of the countries of the recruits of such
organization and the laws of the United St

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find it particularly interesting that this bill is written on the
basis of seeking to 'inform' foreign ladies about the male clients they
are writing to, yet does not place such a requirement on providing
details of ladies from the US. Can you just imagine having to go to the
police station, be fingerprinted and provide a background check to the
local newspaper before you could reply to a personal ad. I wonder what
the real motive behind the bill actually is.

Please help us, especially those clients who live in the state of
Washington, to challenge this bill by contacting the any and all of the
following following members of the committee that will soon be voting on
this proposed legislation and making your views known.

... in response to Something of interest for the guys down ..., posted by Zink on Feb 3, 2002

i can see just how those government types
will feel duty bound to require these new steps by law.
i guess they do not know how much of this is already
covered later on in the course of the guy getting the K-1 visa for a lady. clearly some times the INS will fail to see, or get, some important bit of info. and then they give some visas that really should not be granted.
and THAT point of granting the visa is really the one point where the government begins to truely claim to have an interest in the relationship. BEFORE that point it is not anyone else's business who we choose to write, or to who we choose to make an international phone call. i guess those law makers who favor these two bills must not care so much about adults having freedom of speech in america.
it seems to me that most jugdes would have to say
"if you want to fix some problems of international marriages you will have to think of another law cause this one is unconsitutional"
i wonder if those that push this law actually think it can stand a court test, or do they know it will fail and they are just doing it to make noise on this subject.
..does this law have a real chance or am i just too confident and sure of my view of it?

... in response to just like the book "1984", posted by bradley on Feb 3, 2002

I do not know about this law, probaly from a backbencher politician wanting to please someone or in wants and
needs of limelight.
What can the people of WA state, wants or care about who dates whom.  Some church is perhaps behind
this, who knows.
All that I am sure of is, if the pols where girls walking the streets, they would not wear panties so that it goes
faster.
As for 1984, it is already here.  After 9/11th and if Bush has his way, watch out.
Tail Gunner Joe was a lame duck compare to him.
