Earthquake

Curious if anyone heard anything about he small rolling earthquake we had last night? This was the first one I felt in this building. I get a little nervous with having another 10 stories above me in a building with, I'm sure, questionable construction codes.
It happened about 8:30 PM last night. Strong enough to make creaking noises and you could feel the motion pretty well. Lasted about 10 seconds.
It's funny because Peter was here too and just the day before he was commenting that when there was muggy weather, like we have been having in Cali recently, that an earthquake generally happens. Damned if he didn't call that one.
Just wondering where the epicenter was.

Ok, here's what we got. A 5.1 magnitude quake at a depth of 61.8 miles down.
(150 miles) W of BOGOTA, Colombia
(40 miles) WNW of Pereira, Colombia

Thats where they like to pop up. I was in the Armenia region a few months after that city got leveled.  It even flattened quite a bit of Periera (sp?).  However, the more modern tall buildings only had cracks running up the sides of the building.  I have been looking for an apartment in Cali but I cannot find a building with any fire safety. Any suggestions? David

I have been looking for the past four months for an apartment in Cali and have been in maybe 25-30 different buildings.  Not one had any kind of sprinkle system in it.  Best bet is a rope/ladder system (that you purchase) kept in a bag on the balcony.  If you need to use it, just throw it over the side and down you go.  They are fire retardent.  Earthquake proof is another problem when it comes to constuction.  ALL of it is substandard, period!  Not one building is built to our code or say San Francisco's code.  So you have a dilemma, do I buy a home/townhome, (as an example, those above ChipiChapi for $250 mill pesos) which have security, and easy exits being 2 levels  or get a nice condo with the view and condo lifestyle but with a bit more risk when it comes to tremblers?

I've always loved the views to & from those hillside villa's & apartments. But upon closer examination, there's clear indications of soil erosion & shifts. Building/land use codes are non existant in many cases throughout the south.

Those homes behind Chippi are very nice. Imagine what we would pay in Lauderdale for the same pad. There is a company on Ocean Drive between Oakland and Commercial Blvd that sells an escape suit/rope that any idiot can get into and lower themselves out of a building. Even comes with a attachment for a pet. I think it runs around $1,500.00.

Your right about the sprinkler systems. I have only noticed them in the nice hotels.

Where are you located in Lauderdale?
