Just a general request for info about what legal protections/concerns (Civil & Criminal) you have, while you're currently living in Colombia. It's been pointed out to me, that there is a significant difference between what is written and what is practiced. I've been told that "CONNECTIONS" play the largest part in an American's life in Colombia. Pete, Heat, Jim C, Traveller, G Bala...any comments or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Legal protections or concerns?
Well I have had only one little personal experience with the Cali legal system.Somehow someone was getting in to one of my ATM accounts.I think they rigged a device to record the card,a sleeve type thing over the card insert. We found a glue residue when we examined the little ATM both. That plus probably a camera in a little box to get the PIN no.
Try to avoid the little boths, use the atm's at the banks.
I had to file a police report to get reimbursed by visa.It took most of a day to get it done.6 months later I get this summons letter the cops wanted to talk to me.All it was was to tell me they discovered nothing and were going to file the case, basically do nothing.
So, you will not get the level of service from them if something happens. But I have never had them bother me either.Around Crhistmas I am told if they even smell booze on your breath and you are driving they impound your car and its a big fine, but you do not go to jail.
Some friends were driving towards Lago Calima. They were speeding and drinking. The cops stopped them.400,000 pesos and they were old buddies.
SO,I am not very worried about ever having a problem with the cops.IF I ever buy a car there could be some concerns.I guess you want to make a  deal with the other party and split. If the cops show up they can often impound your car.
As far as the cops protecting me I don't expect much.Hopefully they will continue their present campaign against street crime but they have a  long way to go.But on Avenida Sexta there is a police and military presence that means nothing much will happen RIGHT THERE.
I have heard stories of bogus law suits being directed at people with businesses. If you have a presence that gets noticed it might be good to have an attorney on hand.
Drugs, there seems to be almost no inforcement of casual use,but I would say don't do anything in public. On leaving a bordello one night, chica in tow the door guy asked if we wanted any marijuana or cocaine to go.The chica wanted some MJ,the only time I ever did it here and I sure didn't need it,drank enough already. You smell it around alot.I don't think they do anything but if anybody has any experience It would be good to know.
