Title: Professions... Post by: wizard on August 09, 2003, 04:00:00 AM I have encountered men from all walks of life while being involved in this pursuit... Some were working stiffs, some professionals, some retired and possibly some who were independent wealthy... Most were straight-up guys, but there were a few that came across like they had a slice of bologna in each shoe...
Many here have shared what they do from time to time... After reading the forum for a while you figure out who is who... Just out of curiousity, what professions, either past or present, are represented in this group??? Most of you know that I work in the IT Industry... Not writing a book, just curious... Jim c, You have a good point there. and I've thought many times why there is no organized effort to have some sort of social gathering so that the men and their brides(or brides to be) can come together at least once(maybe annually if it were successful)for an evening of food, fun, dancing, and getting to know each other. It is obvious that some friendships have developed as a result of this board and guys meeting each other for the first time during trips to Colombia. Any thoughts on this? I am very serious about buying a small property in Cartagena suitable for conversion to a small guesthouse (less then ten rooms). The entry level for future business in Key West has become too high and I believe that Colombia will turn around in the next two years. Cartagena is the kind of tourist city that I am familliar with, so Maybe I will have a place for us to have the party. AA has three day getaways on sale from time to time so it could be a possibility. Who knows? jimc PS pull up keywestbargains.com and you can see the Barrister House one of my properties. I sold my first house when I got divorced 30 years ago for $24,000.Its now worth $775,000.It would rent for $3000.My payment was $173 and it would have been paid off in 1988.I could have kept it easy but Appreciation plus cash flow wouldhave made me more than $1,000,000.I didn't have any idea what was going to heppen to prices. After they took off in 1977 it became more obvious.I am working to sell a condo a guy paid $107,000 in 1997.He wants $325,000.He could have got $345,000 2 years ago. $775,000 for a one bedroom?Sounds like a tear down.People pay $1,000,000 and tear down the house for the lot. This would be the top areas,Palo Alto,Los Altos,Saratoga,Los Gatos. No way its going up too much for awhile, could come down if interest rates go up too fast.To get multiples of apreaciation it has to be cheap. But lots of areas with cheap property going nowhere. I paid $370,000 for my house in 1999.Got it appraised fpr $745,000 in 2001 and $738,000 this year.Too bad I am spending my equity. Plus I'm tired of the market here.Been there done that.Things that used to work don't anymore.I feel warmer climates calling. Pete Title: Re: Professions... I was directot of sales for a Computer Graphics Software manufacturer, but was downsized last year. That was the impetus for moving to the Dominican Republic. I've been doing some freelance video work. Some web stuff. I have done training seminars and on location training on Digital Video and Graphics software. I've also been drafted to help my buddy who does IT work. he was so swamped and I was "available" that I've learned way too much about networking, firewalls, domains etc etc etc. I just signed on as a contractor for a new software startup. They have almost zero money, so I am making peanuts right now. . . .but I really believe in the product and get to stay in the DR for now, so relatively speaking the pay is pretty good! I just got back from our first major trade show where I acted as demo artist to over 20 magazines as well as hardware partners such as Intel, Apple, HP, AMD etc etc etc. Everything went great, so hopefully the future will bring good things. I am still doing freelance stuff so as not to put all my eggs in one basket. Title: Re: Professions... Three of which were with the DEA Task Force and five as an enforcement crew sergeant.
