Title: Off to Peru, and a funny little story Post by: Golden on July 18, 2003, 04:00:00 AM Im off to Peru to have a church wedding. Ive been married two years (civil ceremony) as of this past month. I promised my wife we would get married in the Church when we had the civil ceremony. We are having a double wedding. Her sister is get married to a guy from Chicago. It should be a beautiful wedding, its a little sad though for my sister-in-law and the guy. After they get married, he has to go home (USA) without her, until the K1 visa goes through the INS (which he just started the process a couple of months ago) He tried to do a DCF, like I did......but you cant do that anymore in Peru. (unless you live there) So, he has to file here and wait. Its got to be tough. They make a great couple.........ohhh I have to tell this story.....my wife is a trip, I came home one night from work and my wife was waiting for me with a copy of my bank statement. It listed all my check card purchases.....she looked at me real serious and says " have you been going to a night club?!" I said ..."No baby..WHY??" ...."It says Barbie-Cutie on your bank statement"...LOL...I told her..."honey, thats a barbeque place!! to go eat"....she soooo funny...I could tell you two or three more stories like that...... got to love it when a gringo/latina mix....What can I say, I love my lil latina.....Im sure you guys have some funny things happen like that or stories that are similar due to the language or culture difference.
Title: Re: funny little story....Ha ! those whacky Peruanas !! Post by: Jim L on July 19, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Off to Peru, and a funny little story, posted by Golden on Jul 18, 2003
I recently had a first meeting/date with a Peruvian woman living here in the US. We met on Amigos.com and after sending emails, exchanging photos, and talking on the phone, we decided to meet at a restaurant near her town (about 40 miles from me). She gave me directions to a "Danish" restaurant that was off the interstate at the third traffic light ("look for the big yellow sign!"). Well, not seeing any such sign I travelled a few more miles then decided to turn around and head back to the 'tercero semáforo'. For the life of me I don't know how I could've missed the first time around that big yellow sign that said...."Denny's Restaurant" Despite the confusion we had a great time, spent the entire day together hiking nearby mountains, and enjoyed paella at a Spanish restaurant that the evening....and she's coming over Tuesday to cook Peruvian for me. Goes to show the language barrier isn't the biggest stumbling block we face - in fact it can often make things quite amusing. [This message has been edited by Red Clay] Had you been to the original Bar-B-Cutie, she would have had reason to be concerned (Murfreesboro Rd. near the car dealership where Judith works) The working girls sometimes outnumbered the restaurant customers, lol. They had a good jukebox, anyway. Ya'll have fun and be careful and don't tell your inlaws that we live in one of those "low-rent districts of the Southern United States", according to another poster. Holler at us when you'uns git back........ When my husband and I met, he was just learning Spanish. One day, he came to my house to meet my family and he was trying to tell them how embarrassed he was about his Spanish being soo poor. He was, of course, telling this to them in Spanish, but instead of saying avergonzado (Spanish word for embarrased), he said embarazado which means to be pregnant. Georgina That's known as a false cognate (cognado falso) and it's the most common error by guys in Spanish 101 classes in every junior college in the US. You latinas always get a great kick out of it and boy are we avergonzados! Never say ¿Te gusta la lengua?, if you're trying to ask a woman if she likes speaking a foreign language. That one got me in a lot of trouble. Title: Re: Here's another one Post by: jim c on July 18, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Here's another one, posted by Miguel on Jul 18, 2003
The first time I met my novia's mother we went to Kilo 18 for lunch. She asked what I liked to eat. I like rabbit which is conejo and incorrectly responded conyo. In Spain Conyo is the C word. my Novia fell off her chair laughing. So never ask for conyo and beans. jimc Title: Re: Re: Here's another one Post by: Cali vet on July 18, 2003, 04:00:00 AM Title: Re: Re: Re: Here's another one Post by: jim c on July 19, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Here's another one, posted by Cali vet on Jul 18, 2003

I hear she was not amused. jim c Title: Re: Re: Re: Re: Here's another one Post by: Miguel on July 19, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Re: Here's another one, posted by jim c on Jul 19, 2003
Well, that beats my screw up. My friend slapped me in the face after I said "lengua", but at least her mother wasn't there! Title: Re: Re: Re: Re: Here's another one Post by: Cali vet on July 19, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Re: Here's another one, posted by jim c on Jul 19, 2003

For the info. I think most latinos will think is cute, so no reason to be avergonzado. Title: Re: Re: Off to Peru, and a funny little story Post by: Michael B on July 18, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Off to Peru, and a funny little stor..., posted by Georgina on Jul 18, 2003
When my X (from Costa Rica) was in college, a bunch of them were sitting around discussing what they were going to do on spring break. She got particularly disgusted with the group of guys who said they were going to Las Vegas to play with the 'slot' machines. (well, the word I was going to write didn't make it through Partick's profanity filter, but I think you all know what she thought she HEARD, vs. what they actually said) Title: Re: Off to Peru, and a funny little story Post by: luvslife on July 18, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Off to Peru, and a funny little story, posted by Golden on Jul 18, 2003

I'm leaving for Lima on Monday for 2 weeks. I'll be in Lima for few days initially then heading out to the mountains, I think. Anyway, would you like to hook up? I think my novia would love to talk to a peruana who has been to the US. Email me at djm12285@hotmail.com Dan Miller |
