Title: Cyrillic IM?
Post by: Gman on February 23, 2004, 05:00:00 AM
I just switched to a Mac and am trying to figure out what i need to do so when
my fiance' gets here, she'll be able to IM with her parents.

What messenger/IM  service has cyrillic capability and Mac compatability?

I'm not a very technically savvy person.

Any one know?

MSN is cyrrilic capable. My wife uses it to chat with me. When I installed it on Russian windows for her it automatically came up in russian. I had to russify my computer a long time ago so I can type in cyrrillic as well. Yahoo messenger will allow you to type in cyrrillic but the basic program is still in English.

Not sure about Mac compatible though. I don't have the links anymore on how to do russification. But if you run a search on that word(russification) you should find some material to help. I know that there were websites on how to set up Macs for multiple languages.

I don't know anything about Mac's, but my wife uses ICQ with Cyrillic fonts to chat with her mother in Russian.  You'd have to find out how to add Russian/Cyrillic capabilities to your keyboard.  In Windows it's relatively simple.

We also put keyboard stickers on our keyboard from DataCal (www.datacal.com) that show cyrillic letters, in addition to our regular English letters.  Be prepared to spend around $20 for them though.

Hope this helps.

It's the first chat application that hit the internet.  ICQ (I Seek You) predates AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Lotus Sametime, Trillian, etc.  I think it is still the most popular chat application worldwide, followed closely by AIM.  Incidently, ICQ is now owned by AOL, which makes AOL the largest Chat client owner, combining AIM and ICQ...

You should be able to get ICQ from their website (http://www.icq.com).  It comes in standard and lite versions.  My wife uses the standard version.  As a plus, if your partner has an SMS enabled cell phone, you can send text messages to their phone...
