I read some of the comments and YOU HAVE got to be KIDDING? The only one I even hesitate on is number 10. These are VERY simple question. These are actual questions from the tests done by the INS (now BCIS). Title: Re: Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW Post by: Cold Warrior on July 11, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW, posted by Bubba on Jul 11, 2003

You are an exception to the rule. Seriously, let a few of those questions creep into a conversation---dumbfounded looks are assured to appear. Most high school students here will tell you that this nation is a democracy, heck even Home Depot pushes the propoganda with their advertising. How many Americans are there that could answer these questions? Title: Re: Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW Post by: Lynn on July 10, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW, posted by AE on Jul 10, 2003
Not many. About a year ago I started quizing people I saw displaying American flags, if the opportunity arose. First, I would say something like "Looks like you are a real patriot" just to get started, then I ask "Can you name any of your rights set forth under the Constitution?" Out of the dozens of people I posed that question to, only two could even come up with "one". "If you don't know your rights and claim them, you don't have them" Title: Re: Re: Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW Post by: Richard on July 10, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW, posted by Lynn on Jul 10, 2003
I have the right to arm bears um, er, or is that the right to bear arms? I know what you're saying - I can only come up with a few myself. (My favorite right is the right to remain silent because anything I say will be misquoted and used against me. (Oh, well, maybe I'm wrong about the misquoted part.) I have heard the story before about how an imigrant must learn more about America to become a citizen than most citizens learn / retain from their schooling. .....is when you tell them that by displaying the flag, that they go down to Wal-Mart and buy, that they are suspending their "Rights" under the Constitution by displaying a mutilated flag. As a side note, I'm always armed----right, left, both----the police don't find that too amusing ;) Title: Re: What really makes 'em scratch their heads..... And, the flag they buy at Wal-Mart could well be made in China. It was reported that shortly after 9-11 all Chinese flag manufacturers went into three shifts. Maybe that is why so few are concerned about the threat to our rights from Homeland Security and the Patriot Acts. They won't miss them until the battering ram knocks down their door some night. How quickly we forget the excesses of the post WW I Red Scare, the Palmer Raids, the Japanese American internments, HUAC, McCarthy, WACO, etc. My favorite is when Earl Warren, CA Attorney General in 1942 was asked why the American citizens of Japanese heritage on the West Coast needed to be interned when there was absolutely no evidence of espionage or sabotage. Just look at your current Arab population in the US now. Don't think they aren't worried. Already, thousands are in detention, waiting for deportation. Many of them, simply because their immigration paperwork had clerical errors. Remember, cross your t's and dot your i's... Oh, and check the "NO" box in answer to the question "Are you a terrorist?", unless of course you are one. :-) Title: Re: Re: Re: Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW Post by: Lynn on July 10, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: Re: Citizenship quiz for your RW, posted by wilmc on Jul 10, 2003
As a people, can you believe we have become so ignorant? I have first had knoweledge/experience with the trampling of Article I of the Bill of Rights and the general populous could see it if they opened their eyes. As I understand it, Alaska and a few other states are starting to reject Patriot I. Title: That's because they're busy dealing with other terrorists. Those d*mned Exxon Tankers are being used as WMDs up there. Nothing like destroying an entire ecological system to get your attention... Seriously, I imagine that Patriot I will eventually be eaten away by all the legal challenges that will be put against it. I imagine the ACLU is waiting with baited breath for some serious legal challenges it can jump in on... Nah, they would rather deal with some issue involving a homo or something like that than deal with core freedom issues. Title: Re: ACLU Post by: wilmc on July 12, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to ACLU, posted by Lynn on Jul 11, 2003
You may misjudge the ACLU. Their goal is to protect our civil rights, even when you and they may not agree with how we exercise those rights. They have fought to protect the civil rights of gun owners whose 2nd amendment rights have been violated by the ATF. I agree with you in their performance on "some" things. But there other issues that they have so far cowered from---like the right guaranteed under Article I "To petition the Government for a redress of grievances" Why haven't you heard about it, deliberate media blackout. How do I know, I was there. Title: Re: Re: Re: ACLU Post by: wilmc on July 12, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: Re: ACLU, posted by Lynn on Jul 12, 2003
I did not mean to imply that they are perfect. What org. is? I only meant to express that the ACLU goal to defend the Bill of Rights and their slogan "Keep America Safe AND Free" are commendable. It may be worth the consideration of this forum to note that one of the key issues that they list on their web page is "immigrant rights." It may be difficult for you to imagine but it is entirely possible that any one of us could find ourselves seeking the help of the ACLU. Imagine if your immigrant spouse were "fingered" by a "confidential informer" who is just picking names out of the blue to earn points with the authorities. Where will you turn when the boat is sailing for Guantanamo. It has happened here. I am neither a member or their advocate. I am often offended by the organizations, issues, and individuals they defend. Usually though when my emotions have cooled and I reflect upon the core issue, our rights. I find that I am grateful for the ACLU. They do the thankless, messy, job of defending the unpopular to protect the rights of us all. They ask the tough questions. For the life of me, I do not understand, if their intent is real, why they backed away from that fight. The support was there, the petitions were in place (hand delivered no less) with "all" of congress and the senate as well as executive. Could have been a "major" victory for all. I can imagine how frustrating it was and continues to be. 14 years ago my ex-wife and a small group of fellow concerned citizens fought to prevent a garbage incinerator from being constructed in our community. It was a terribly difficult fight and at times I was afraid for the safety of our family. We were successful. I still have tremendous respect for my ex., for her courage and leadership. Interestingly, the inceinerator that was operational on Long Island and was the model for the proposed one in our community was shut down a few years ago because it was found to be a gross polluter. Lesson, keep fighting. Title: Yeah, the historian of the 1920's... Post by: BURKE89 on July 12, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Re: ACLU, posted by wilmc on Jul 12, 2003
