If you are going to be in Kiev, you might take a day and tour the Hermitage. It's an outdoor museum with lots of old Russian buildings on it. Many of these houses, churches, etc. were disassembled from around Ukraine, transported to the Hermitage and reassembled. You get a view of all the different architectures throughout history. Kiev also has an art museum, a war history museum (at the base of the titanium lady statue) and one of the monasteries will give you a tour of their caves and all their mummified saints, if you make the appropriate donation. Ladies have to wear a scarf at all times on monastery grounds though. If you are going to be on the Crimean coast, there are lots of excellent sites to see. Check out Zoidberg's photos for some excellent places to visit. There is a beautiful park behind Vorontsov palace, and if you are in the right place, you can get an excellent "Kodak moment" where you can get a picture of someone with the castle in the background. Also, if you get a chance, spend a few hours along the seashore in Yalta. I have a fun time there with my fiancée, her mother, and her grandmother. How's that for a few ideas? Title: Hermitage? In Kyiv???? . . . . Post by: Dan on June 22, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Where in Ukraine are you going to be?, posted by John K on Jun 21, 2003
From the description, I am pretty sure you mean Perehova - an outdoor museum near Kyiv that serves as a living museum with architecture from around Ukraine and at different architectural periods. Here is a link to a site that shows just a few photos of the place -- http://www.uecenter.org/internship/katie/gallery/beginning.htm - Dan PS - the Hermitage is in St. Petersburg (last time I checked anyway --smile--). I recognize the wooden church. They also have a number of different style windmills there. The thing my wife loved the most though was the shashlik stand. :-) Title: Re: Poland, Baltics Russia then back to Ukraine Post by: Travis on June 20, 2003, 04:00:00 AM ... in response to Poland, Baltics Russia then back to Ukra..., posted by Antonua on Jun 20, 2003
If you have a chance to go through the Kaliningrad oblast, check out Svetlogorsk. It's a resort town on the Baltic. Very nice! While your there, check out the Coronian Spit. It's a park of sorts in the region. The Germans turned what was basically a sand bar into a man made forest. This was done back when Kaliningrad was Konigsburg. |
