Difficult for us not to put a vowel in there. Hence the confusion.

... derives from the ancient Yiddish word, SCHMUCK, and as early as 1385 it first began appearing in Siberian literature as CHMUCK...
then about 100 years later as CHMUK.  In the 1970's it was used extensively on a dubbed-in Russian TV version of "Laugh-In" by comedian, Arte Johnson, as he wildly ran around yelling "CHMOK CHMOK!"  ...later to be challenged by comedian Tommy Smothers (Tominski Smootherge) during an interview on "Good Morning Russia".  Smootherge basically accused Johnson of stealing his borschline.  Eventually a lawsuit resulted and was settled out of court.  To this day Johnson and Smootherge do not speak to each other.  Thus, loosely translated, CHMOK (also CHIMOK) refers to a schmuck who kisses a woman's photograph.

And now you know the other side of the story.

CHMOK CHMOK!

Are you going to enlighten us with the original Yiddish meaning?

Pordschmock,

I was hoping you would ask.  Here it is (and this quote is 100% correct with no abridgements or alterations.)

"schmuck also shmuck (shmùk) noun
Slang.
A person regarded as clumsy or stupid; an oaf.
[Yiddish shmok, penis, fool, probably from Polish smok, serpent, tail.]"

If you let your thought process drift outside of the borscht, what with all the Adam & Evish references to penis, foolery, a Polish Pope (or is it baser than that... like a Polish sausage maybe...), the serpent, and tail, (that's right "TAIL!"  I thought that words usage was from the '50-'60's or something), then the implications here go all the way back to biblical times and maybe catholicism.

Thus, loosely translated, CHMOK (also CHIMOK) refers to a schmuck as one who kisses a woman's photograph - or maybe has mental sex with a woman using her photograph... and we thought the concept of cybersex was new!

Man, this Freudian stuff really chmuks up my head...
