Title: Bedazzled -- Guys with RWs -- or any RWs
Post by: MarkInTx on February 20, 2003, 05:00:00 AM
Hey guys with Russian Wives... (or RW, if you're listening)

Have you watched the movie "Bedazzled"?

The reason I ask is that there is a point where Branden Fraiser speaks Russian to some Russian Mafiso types.

MOST of what he says is subtitled.

But there is one expression he makes that is not. All I know is when he says it, Stas and Victoria about fell off of the couch laughing. I asked them what he said, and Stas was about to tell me when his mother warned him that such talk would not be tolerated.

I asked her later what he said and she tried to tell me, but her English failed her.

I get the sense of what it was... but if any of you have a true translation, I'd love to hear it...

I haven't seen it. If you really want to know what the phrase means, ask Victoria to e-mail it to me in Russian and I will translate it for you.

He said this:

Не хера себе я знаю русский.

You may want to email my husband at: markjoel60@hotmail.com, since I do not think you can post the translation here!

the aforesaid phrase can have a duel meaning.....
1. fuk you i know russian
2. fuk you i do not know russian
considering the show the second is probably correct and it was an inside joke (the character does not know Russian but is speaking it with the help of the devil)

Barry, is it "ne" as in a negative or "ni" as in some other word?

Actually, its "ni". "Ne" doesn't fit in that phrase. I spotted it right away.

....phrase. It's amazing your fellow Texan was too lazy to learn even a little of the language, considering how he waxes poetic about everything else.

Russian is too difficult for most people. I've been struggling with it for 2 years. I still can't follow a full news broadcast on RTV. Almost there.

Achieving fluency in a second language isn't something that can be done overnight. Adults don't have the same the capacity for learning a second language the way kids are able to.  It's been said that the older one gets, the less likely one is to learn a second language.  Wether or not its because the logistics of doing so get more complicated as we age is unclear. And if you're a native English speaker, learning a language like Russian complicates it even further.  It's not like learning another Romance language such as French, German, Italian or Spanish (another advantage the guys who are looking for Latin women have) which have some common origins and roots and therefore follow similar sentence structures and rules of syntax, diction and tense and use the same system of alpahbetical characters. Russian is a language with completely different roots.  The best way to achive total written and spoken fluency is complete and total immerision -- something that's not a viable and practical option for most people. And even THAT can take up to 7 or eight years.

that is what a Ruskie told me from the translation...they said that it was phrased improperly but that was the gist of it------your explaination does sound more appropriate-
