I know it is in the archives somewhere, but I can not find it.  So, could someone please reind me how to get my Windows 98 operating system to have Russian language sent to me appear as Russian instead of some indecipherable computer language.

I use this virtual keyboard to type online in Russian. I then copy and paste into my email. ( I'm not fluent )

My computers are set to facilitate Russian and Ukrainian using the steps others have already posted.  Still, my wife sometimes receives email that does not display correctly ... just garbage.  No matter how I changed the encoding I still got garbage.  Then I began playing with fonts.  When I selected font TLCryllic2 everything suddenly displayed perfectly.  The last episode was an attachment to an email.  The individual had created the email offline, then created an email with a brief "privet", and attached the message she had earlier created with MS Word.  She emailed it from work, so you can figure out the reason for sending the message as an attachment.

Intended tip .... if you try all the encoding and it still doesn't display, then try changing fonts.

right click on what you want to read, from the menu that appears choose "encoding" then choose Cryllic/windows

go to Control Panel
Click on Add/Remove programs.
Windows set-up.
Scroll to Multi Language Support.
Tick you choices and apply.

Also

from the Control Panel.
Click Keyboard
Languages/Add, scroll and chose languages (to give you ability to type in the chosen languages).

A little blue box will appear in the bottom left hand corner of your screen where you can switch between languages.

I use a black water proof marker to put Russian letters on my keyboard, they wear out every three months or so, but I remember most of them anyway now.

If you are having difficulty getting Russian characters to appear in your browser - that is one problem.

If you are having difficulty getting Russian characters to appear in an application such as MS Word - that is a different problem.

Which of these - or both - is it you are having difficulty with? And if it's the browser - which browser are you using?

Dan, thanks for answering so quickly.  I assume it is my browser because the email opened up in junk instead of Russian.  It happens all the time when a girl I am corresponding with from Russia throws in a couple of Russian words in her English email.

You are using Outlook Express or maybe Outlook?

Since my customer here is a Lotus Notes shop, I'll have to do this from memory.

Go the the drop-down at the top of the window called 'View' - then select 'Encoding' - you should see a right arrow and there should be an option for "More". Select that and find the entries for Cyrillic.

From this point it is hit-and-miss. The most common one is "Cyrillic (Windows)" - try selecting that and see if the characters appear correctly. If not - repeat the process only select "Cyrillic (K018-R)" - and check again. Repeat the process until you find one that allows the characters to display correctly.

Try this and let me/us know if it works.

with AOL, get yourself a Russian address such as from mail.ru, yandex.ru to handle the encoding or follow what I wrote above and cut and paste the strange signs.

Yes, you need to make sure the encoding bits are not dropped.

If they are, then you can't do anything.

If your email service didn't drop them, then View-encoding-Cyrillic should work...

I got lucky really, when I went to Kiev in August I purchased the "Windows xp MUI professional" for 8.00 bucks in the underground, Wow what a gift, you purchase it here for 278.00, it changes everything into a Russian PC, you know with XP you can have multple profiles so I set up my ladies PC for Russian while my Profile is in English. It's to bad that it's not available at a more reasonable price here.

Anyway I sell you a copy for 199.99, and if 10 of you boys buy it I can go back to Kiev sooner:):):):)...
