After reading the effects of Chernobyl on Belarus, I wonder about cities close to Chernobyl like Shostka, Chernihiv, and Korosten. Were they just as affected and if not how come. Did the prevailing winds etc have some effect on just Belarus? Title: Re: What Other Cities Are Still Affected ... Fishtiger , Here's a few suggestions for you : There was an American guy living in Ukraine ( about a year ago I think ) , who occaisionally posted here under the names Jimmy and/or JimmyUSA . He worked at the Chernobyl site for quite some time ; so he could probably give you some first hand information about some of these things . I don't remember exactly what his involvement was , and can't say for sure whether or not he was involved with the cleanup operations , recovery operations , or some other aspect . I haven't seen him post for quite a while and don't know what ever became of him , but if you do an archive search using his name , I'm sure you'll come up with something . Also , try an archive search using the word 'Chernobyl' as your search criteria . If those two suggestions don't at least get you pointed in the right direction , check the discussion thread on archive page #188 . There were a few Chernobyl map links posted there , maybe they'll still work for you . Do a search. You will get plenty of hits that will provide the answers you are looking for, including maps of the most and least affected areas. I think Chernigov is within the high exposure zone. I have met a lady from Bryansk, Russia which is in a low to moderate zone. She and her little girl are very healthy and, I might add, very beautiful :) Title: Gomel Post by: Cold Warrior on December 31, 2002, 05:00:00 AM ... in response to What Other Cities Are Still Affected by ..., posted by fishtiger on Dec 31, 2002
I believe Gomel was badly hit. I don't have any stats but apparently most of the children born with deformities come from gomel and surrounding areas. I wouldn't touch the ladies there with a barge pole although the radiation doesn't seem to affect adults only those growing up and in the process of cell division. |
