Title: Happy Easter!
Post by: ChuckRM on March 31, 2002, 05:00:00 AM
My wife and I celebrated Easter today - a cultural compromise.
Orthodox Easter is still a couple of weeks away.

We did the Easter basket routine, yesterday.  We colored some eggs.  They do that in Russia, too.  We got a chocolate bunny and some jelly beans for the Easter basket.  That was the American contribution.  My wife made some Russian Easter cakes.  So we had both American stuff and Russian stuff in our Easter basket.  My wife says that they don't have chocolate bunnies and jelly beans in her home town (Omsk).  She liked them.

My wife says that in Russia the custom is to make the Easter cakes and color the eggs on Good Friday, take the cakes and the eggs to church for the priest to bless on Saturday, and eat them on Sunday.

Are any of you married guys celebrating today or will you wait for Orthodox Easter?

My wife's grandmother says that Easter in Ukraine will be sometime at the end of May.  Anyone actually have a more definite date on this?  Just curious.

How the Orthodox Church determines the date of Easter

The determination of the date of Easter is governed by a computation based on the vernal equinox and the phase of the moon. According to the ruling of the First Ecumenical Synod in 325, Easter Sunday should fall on the Sunday which follows the first full moon after the vernal equinox. If the full moon happens to fall on a Sunday, Easter is observed the following Sunday. The day taken to be the invariable date of the vernal equinox is March 21.
