i packed a few goodies for my fiancee for el dia de amor y amistad and decided to also send her brother a cell phone that i wasn't using so he could use it with comcel. i was informed that sending any kind of electronics are subject to a 30% tax on the declared value! i couldn't believe it, 30 friggin percent plus the cost of shipping. it's a good thing the phone is used but imagine sending a new phone, declaring at least $100 if you want to insure it and paying an additional $30.

Two years ago (before I knew any better), I sent my then fiancee a CD Player so she can play her English Courses which were on CD's.  I sent it UPS (first mistake) and did not realize that she would have to wait nearly 2 months for it, and when she did I had to send her NEARLY the amount of the CD Player just for the damn taxes.

Made me mad enough to chew through raw iron!

Take it in in a suitcase.Or send it with someone.Take it out of any new packaging. If asked say its for your personal use.Or pay 35% plus in taxes. If you declare a shipped item you pay tax on it.
It's why stuff costs more here.Welcome to Colombia.
One thing, when comparing costs of items purchased here, sales tax is included in the cost.Second.Department stores are alot higher than El Centro type places like in Cali.Prices are better there.ALOT better.50%-80% the cost.

I believe that DIAN allows up to $1,500 per person as personal and family items duty free as declared luggage. I have found that the customs personel in Cali are pretty lax on checking ....
