My wife has a degree in criminal justice, has been exposed to different cultures, and has traveled quite a bit. However, her attitude concerning the future was not to far from the average Colombian. They generally believe in living for today! Alot of my time is spent re-educating her on the benefits of saving/investing with a big payout over time that couldn't be achieved by being the typical consumer. Financial freedom was a brand new concept for her. Fortunately I have great personal examples for her to learn from. I told her that most of the Colombians that I met had a special name for the future: Ture (Tooray) and he is cursed my many. F..U.. Ture.
Keep your eyes open guys!
Not complaining at all just giving some insight. Although we can afford better, we live modestly while we wait for our money to start working for us. Even gave up the Porsche (sigh!!) to accelerate the process.

My wife has spent most of her life surviving and a secure future was never an option.

She doesn't have any notion about saving.  Fortunately she doesn't want to control my money but she does, at times, want more things that I can buy.  That takes time and patience and fortunately she accepts my decisions without necessarily understanding them.

Kudos on delaying gratification in favor of investing and money management.  I'm sure it may be tough with a beautiful woman pulling you in the opposite direction.

I would suggest investing in something real estate related rather than the stock market, if at all possible.

Thanks for the kind words. It is tough at times, but my wife now understands or I should say is getting smarter about our future and the enormous benefits ahead if we only exercise patience. I agree to some degree with investing in real estate and a very small percentage of our investments are in stock. How is the search for Mrs right coming along?

"I agree to some degree with investing in real estate and a very small percentage of our investments are in stock."

Real estate investing is my area of expertise, so I would be happy to share and/or swap ideas with you.

"How is the search for Mrs right coming along?"

As you may recall from my other posts, I am planning to be in BAQ no later than April 30.  I will be using Jamie's agency.

Between now and then I am diligently preparing:  continuing salsa lessons, started learning Spanish basics using Pimsleur audio CDs.  I will also hire a Spanish tutor to teach me some of the specific things I want to discuss.  If I can fit in a regular spanish class I will try to do that as well.

Of course, I read the board(s) daily to learn from my heroes like you :-)

Gracias for asking!
