To those of you travelling to Barranquilla...

...and want to stay in a nice hotel, the Dann Carlton Hotel just opened last month. I stayed there for five days. It is MUCH better than the other 5 star hotels in BQ not only in terms of the quality of rooms but also the location. It is directly across the street from the Buena Vista mall which has a movie theater and a grocery store, among the other upscale department stores. Almost everything you need is right there. The Dann Carlton also has a rotating restaurant on the top floor (#14?) which is still under construction as are the upper floors. It should be completed by April. The cost is 170 thousand pesos/day (73 US dollars/day) for a room with a king-sized bed. But keep in mind that is a promotional price and will probably increase very soon. In my opinion, the Dann Carlton is the best hotel in Barranquilla, at least compared to the other hotels I stayed at, which include the El Prado, Puerta del Sol, La Plaza, and The Hotel Royal.

When I was there last month I thought It was an apartment building.  It just has that kinda look to it.  Its a gaint red bricked building ajacent to the mall as mentioned.  Looked nice.  Being new you know its gonna cost some duckets.

I agree with you. I was surprized to see how nice it was when I walked inside because from the outside it looks like a typical red bricked apartment buliding, like you said.

Zack, do you know the direct number for the Dan Carlton hotel in BQ. Also was this the rate during the week or weekend or both and it did include taxes and breakfast
Thanks for the update. I was looking at staying at El Prado but this nay be a better choice. How far is it from El Pardo?

I just called the Dann Carlton and from a price standpoint, you may be better off staying at the El Prado. I don't know what the El Prado costs these days, but the Dann Carlton has already jacked up the prices significantly. Now it costs 239 thousand pesos/day (103 US dollars/day) from Monday thru Thursday,  no breakfast and tax not included. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the cost is 149 thousand pesos/day (64 US dollars/day), with a breakfast, taxes not included. Also keep in mind that the upper floors are still under construction and the noise travels well. The DC is about a 10 minute cab ride from the El Prado.

Thx Zack, I will give them a call and see what I can come up with. El Prado quoted me pretty competitive rates. What about Hotel Royal. Is it half descent and does it have hot water in the showers and a good location?

If you are looking to save money, the Hotel Royal is a good choice. I have stayed there many times. It is walking distance from the El prado. The El Prado has a nice pool and the surrounding landscape/greenery is beautiful- a nice place to kick back in the sun with a lady. But the rooms at the El Prado are so-so at best. I thought that the rooms at the Hotel Royal were better despite being less than half the price of the El Prado. The biggest disadvantage of the Hotel Royal is that international calls cannot be made from the rooms. Local calls are possible but international calls must be made at the front desk. Regarding the hot showers, I have noticed that almost all Colombian hotel showers are very warm but rarely hot. I prefer the option of hot but as long as it isn't cold, I'm O.K. with it.
