Advise please-My financee was asked on a packett received from the US Embassy in Lima, Peru-how she was paying for the airline tickets from Lima to the USA. A service in Lima that is helping her says she should indicate that she's paying for the tickets. Most latinas don't have that kind of money and everyone knows it. Is this good advise? Is this a trick question to establish a person's honesty? Does anyone really know?

If you are referring to Question 28 on Form DS-156 (Nonimmigrant Visa Application), then I believe the question is intended more for applicants for a tourist visa. By asking who will pay for the trip, they are trying to help determine whether the visitor will return after the trip or if they may be more likely to stay in the U.S.  If someone applying for a tourist visa said her boyfriend or fiancé was paying for the trip, then the embassy would be more likely to disapprove the visa. For K-Visa applicants, it shouldn’t make any difference so I would just have her say that you are paying for the trip.

I would always be wary of anyone who suggests that she fudge the answers on a visa application form. Remember that she must sign her name certifying that all answers on the form are true and correct…

They asked this question when my wife applied for her K-3 visa. We answered it honestly and said that I was paying for it.
