I want to thank you all for the input.

I think I failed to mention a few things.  First of all, I don't
need "hand holding" from the agencies.  I was thinking of where
to procure the ladies' contact details and how best to get in
touch with them.  My instinct says e-mail but then I remember
that few of the ladies have ready access to e-mail.  Are
snailmail and the phone plausible alternatives?  My approach
would be to send a nice letter of introduction--handwritten--
nd follow this up by e-mail (if any) and phonecalls.

The second thing: not only do I definitely plan to visit
Colombia or Brazil but I am actually MOVING to live there
permanently (most probably Colombia).  (This should also
eliminate the "gold-diggers" from the race.)  I only LIVE in
Spain--I don't speak Spanish.  I can understand it perfectly
but my spoken knowledge is basic.  I will rectify that though
the minute I get there as I'd really like to learn Spanish.

I KNOW that nothing beats meeting the girls in person but (1) I
want to get in touch with a few first and see if they sound
good and THEN meet them, and (2) I am not interested in clubs
and similar so where else WOULD one meet girls??

Thanks to internet cafes, even women of modest means have access to email. If you are going to Colombia to live, why even screw around with email? Believe me, meeting women in Colombia is like falling down. You don't have to do anything except circulate in normal life to meet woman by the boatload. I could find a woman to marry every week if I was in Medellin.

Michael, you leave me a little befuddled........how can you "understand" spanish perfectly, yet can't speak it??
Not trying to be mean, I just find that almost impossible to understand.  Maybe it's just me.  Also, you live in Spain, but you want to wait until you get to Colombia to learn Spanish........damn do I feel stupid today with these questions.

Well, actually, very simply!!  Haven't you ever found
with a foreign language that you can understand eg.
written text easily but don't have the knowledge or
confidence to speak it?

And the reason I don't want to study Spanish in Spain
is that it's too expensive.  Or better put, you get
the same thing in Colombia that you do in Spain but
you pay 80% less.

BTW, I only LIVE in Spain; I'm not Spanish.

So how do you get by without speaking it?

Regarding your thoughts, I agree that there are several parts to proficiency in language, and you need practice in each to feel confident with it.  However, comprehension is a lot more difficult than speaking it, so if you got the former down, you are almost there.

Oh no, I DO speak it!!  I just don't speak it terribly
well.  The groundwork is there; I'm au fait with the
grammar and the "flow" of the language--if you know
what I mean--but I need to beef up my vocabulary and
hone in the grammar a bit. Smiley

You have not come out and said if you are an american or not.  Are you?  One reason I am asking is that many years ago, I had some cousins that were in the Air Force and stationed in Spain.  In fact, one of my cousins married a spanish girl.  I am not sure, but I think she was from the Madrid area.  At any rate, they have now been married for over 30 years and live in the Wichita, Kansas area.   I just thought that you might find that fascinating.  But, to make my point, I am curious about why you are living in Spain if you are not a native of Spain?  Not trying to be nosy, just curious.  Also, you are obviously very young.  There are not very many young men your age who is considering a serious relationship with a lady from another country.  Up to now, the closest I came was when I was in the Air Force as well.  I was stationed in England for two years.  I dated several British girls, and I was very attracted to them at that time. But, that was a long time ago (the late 70's). I was your age when I was there.  I ended up marrying a girl from Oklahoma, where I am from and we had 3 sons.(My oldest son is almost the same age as you are).  Well, that's ancient history now, but to get back to your situation; there are many men on this board more experienced with latinas than I am. But, I doubt that there are many of them with more "life experiences" than me.  Over the years, I have travelled to many countries, and been in most of our US states.
I don't claim to know much about latinas or living in Latin America; but women are in many ways the same. Basically,if they are honestly looking for a good husband, they just want to love and be loved.  But, women need to be made to feel secure in their home and relationships.  They certainly expect you to know what you want, and to be honest and fair to them. Now, all of that is true, if they ar honest, and not just a player! I wish you the best in your quest. Hopefully, you will meet the right lady and not have to go through the pain of divorce.  Best of luck.

Haha Smiley)) OK, I'll come out and say... - I'm NOT
American.  US soldiers rescued my father from a
concentration camp at the end of the War but I've
otherwise nothing to do with the US.

Why do I live in Spain? Well, it's preferable to London.
I've lived in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany,
Belgium, England and now Spain.  I like Spain the best
but ti's still not good enough.  It's kind of somnolent,
torporific; at least my part.

As for wanting a serious relationship, well, I have my
view of life.  I'm something of a philosopher when it
comes to the necessity of the right kind of love in
one's life so don't get me started. Cheesy  Why from
another country?  Coz I've found that "western" women don't have much to offer me.  Of course some will
disagree but each to their own.

So, you have really gotten to travel a good deal.  That's great.  I am somewhat surprised that you have not snagged up one of the Eastern European ladies.  I have heard that there were many quality ladies available there; basically from the old Soviet bloc countries: Russia, Ukraine, Poland, etc.  At any rate, thanks for letting us know a little more about your story.  I hope you enjoyed my stories as well.  I just can't believe that the years have rolled on by as they have.  Also, one thing I didn't tell you yet; but I have shared on this board before.  My middle son is in the Marines, and a few months ago he came back from Iraq.  Now, there's a lovely place.  Everything you would want-- if you're a terrorist wacko! Thank God my son came home. This was his second tour over there. But, last year on the way back, he and his buddies did get to go to Australia and Hawaii. So, that was indeed a great thing for him! Well, best of luck on your search for a latina.

You're right, OkieMan, I'm very lucky. Being able to
travel (and learn/experience things while doing it) is
one of the best things in life. As for Eastern European
girls, well, they can be lovely and loyal and all that
but I find many of them too depressive and anyway, I
prefer morenas. ;-)

Yeah, the years DO roll by quickly. Luckily I've realized
this relatively young so I've begun enjoying life to the
fullest.

Glad to hear your son is OK.  I have my views on the war
in Iraq but I'm glad to know he and his friends are fine.
