Personal Ad in Local Newspapers- does posting ads work??

Any suggestions?  Personal experience?  Pros and cons?  What to do, what not to do?  Best cities to post personals?

I got excellent results from an ad I posted with South of the Border. Ad ran for about 6 months, got around 40 responses, mostly from Colombia, also Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia. Well worth it for me.

Thanks for the reply..... I checked out South of the Border, but didn't want to go thru' an agency to place a personals type ad... would rather do it directly in the city I chose.  But 40 responses is good!
