Hi
I know some of you will think I am crazy but I was wondering.

Do people eat Pork Rinds in South America? You know the fired pork fat snack food.

I am asking this because today I spoke with the international sales director of a company in Chicago that makes the pork rind pellets.
This company is the largest producer of pork rind Pellets (the uncooked small pellet of pork) in the USA and they have a plant in Mexico.
He said they do a fair voulume in Bogata Colombia and are expanding into other countries in SA.
THis was not a get rich business opp. presentation. I called this company because I think that pork rinds is a money making business.

I know you can make money with pork rinds here selling at fairs and flea markets. I am a half a*s carney and I know a lot about little money making ventures.

I know in SA you would have to do this on a larger scale than just a mom and pop operation. Remember there are close to 8 million people in Lima.

But I was wondering if anyone has ever seen Pork Rinds sold in Colombia and if people their know what they are Huh?

I know this might seem like a crazy idea but remember Fred Smith (the guy who started a little company called Fed-Ex) flunked his masters thesis on Overnight Package Delivery because the professor said it was not feasible.

So much for the pointy head, know-it-all professor, guess his theory was wrong. That is why he is the professor and Fred Smith is the Billionaire, some people go out and make money and others will tell you that it can't be done. I wonder how he feels when every he gets a package delivered by Fed Ex?

Moam,
Great response.  It goes along with the old saying:  "Those that can DO"  Those that can't TEACH"

They got them in Brazil too.  Unfortunately, they aren't too picky about getting all of the hair off.  Sometimes you get a "fuzzy" one.  When we lived there, my dad (who loves the things) solved this problem buy disinfecting them with plenty of beer.  On a side note, many Brazilians (including my wife) are very apprehensive about eating pork.  I have had a heck of a time trying to convince her to eat bacon or pork sausage.  They have had quite a few problems with swine parasites (especially Trichinella spiralis) and therefore pork is very suspect.  As a result, they cook the heck out of it.  Bacon at my house is consumed at the consistency and texture of Doritos  Sad

Mi Peruanita loves the stinky things, got really excited when she saw them here. She's not allowed to eat'em in the car, not enough ventilation, lol.

Yes, they are definitely popular in parts of Colombia. Both as a snack food and as a side order for a sit down meal.

Check out the Frito Lay international website. I think the brand names is Maria's in Colombia; they're already selling potato chips, pork rinds, tortilla chips and maybe pretzels.

Frito Lay owns the Margarita brand in Colombia which includes potato chips, plantain chips and I'm pretty sure chicharrones.

You bet they eat fried pork rinds.  They also eat packaged fried banana slices and chicken flavored potato chips (I am not kidding).  I like em all.
