Avianca Package

I sent a package last monday to Cartagena via Florida.  She got the package last night.  However, the card I sent (with a debit card enclosed) may not have arrived.  She says she may have not looked close enough in the large envelope.  Curious what the chances are that someone stole it? They cannot use it without a pin.

I have been sent several bank cards and credit cards using the drop box service that I have mentioned on this board before. You just have your bank send your new card to Miami and the people there take care of getting it to you in Colombia. This is a Colombian company so these people know how to get you your things without anything getting snatched. Transexpress is the name.

Sorry to hear that.  For important doc and the like, I always use Fedex and have never had an issue.  Of course, that said I just jinxed myself. -TNC

My sister sent a debit-card to my mother in Peru twice and it never made it. Even though they don't have the pin, just make sure to notify the bank here about it and cancel the account or change it. You never know.

I think we're all aware that the Col postal service really doesn't deserve the name and there's plenty of corruption on the part of locals who work for customs, the courier companies, etc.

Here's another explanation for pkgs that don't get through:

"I can't even get insurance unless I put an armed guard on each truck," complains Guillermo Castillo, a director with Cerveceria Centroamericana SA, Guatemala's largest vendor of bottled drinks and snack foods. Citywide, more than 12,500 trucks have been hijacked since 1999 -- an average of nine daily -- and their cargo routed to stores controlled by criminal gangs." WSJ, 11 Dec 2003

The company I work for just had product stolen when a UPS truck was hijacked in Mexico City. I imagine truck hijackings by criminal gangs are not unheard of in Col.

They probably think it's a real VISA card. When I needed to send a pkg to Cali I used DHL. Not cheap but at least she got everything.

Anything small like an ATM card should be taped to a piece of paper or cardboard and placed in an envelope so it doesn't get lost.
