How picky is the latin woman compared to the AW? If a woman is willing
to take a man 10-15 years older she can't be picky about appearance. What about a guy who needs to lose 10 pounds but does not have a beer gut? But is otherwise in half-way decent shape?Are they really any different in that area compared to AW?

Another good question with good responses. Here are my impressions and thoughts on the topic.

Personal appearance is very important to latin ladies.  I have noticed when they see someone for the first time or they see photos of relatives, if someone is over weight it is the first comment made.  That applies to both men and women.  Latinas are very competitive over their weight.  

I think AWs are far more tolerant of a few extra pounds than latinas.  I think this is because AWs tend to be far heavier, bigger in height, and so on.

I have several friends who have their AW wifes with them in Chile (poor bastards!). Almost without exception they are gigantic compared to the local ladies.  They don´t have big and fat shops here. The AWs I know here, can´t even buy clothes or shoes, they don´t sell dresses or shoes bigger than a size 8 I was told.

But there is a strange situation, I have noticed here.  The men tend to be more over weight than the women.  I think it is a sign of prosperity, lots of good food and wine I guess. In some ways the sucessful Chilean men are falling into the same trap as AMs.

Take this to heart, the women really do appreciate a guy who is in shape, you have to be able to dance all night buddy!  She may accept it for a while but you will soon get the word, lose the weight. Your image is very important to her.

My advice is go ahead and pick a book on Atkins or South Beach and lose those extra pounds fast, you will be better off for it anyway.  When you get to places like Cali, you will be competing with other gringos at times. First impressions are very important.  

The comment about dressing sharp is right on. The sloppy American look does not cut it in LA. You don´t have to be formal all the time just well groomed that includes personal hygiene, hair, finger nails, and the whole thing.

One charecteristic that I've noticed in regards to men's looks and their success in the Calena search is: As a general rule, personal vanity is very important to Calenas.  Calenas try to look dynamite when they go out, even the not so good looking ones.  That said, Calenas appreciate a man that makes every effort to look as good as he can with what he has regardless of the lack of a perfect body,(supported only by my observations and perception).  

You will be successful if: You dress and pay attention to the details,(clean, shoes, nails, haircut, cologne, etc.), and carry yourself well with a good attitude.  Do that and you'll rise above much of your competition.  Couple the above with learning to speak spanish well and you'll pretty much have your pick.

Zack's right when he says Just Do IT! I can't really see you having any problems in Colombia - but if you are unsure or unwilling to risk airfare + hotel costs etc or you are particularly shy then my service is a valid option.

I think you know the answer to this question. Latin women are much less picky about appearance than American women.

Chevy, for the last year you have been asking good questions about Colombia but I think you need to do what the Nike commercial says and JUST DO IT!! Get down there and see for yourself.

It is my opinion that a decent looking american woman is less likely to accept the "average" looking joe. Assume he is not overweight, just plain looking in his face.Not handsome. Are the latin woman the same way or do they see us, our physical look, differently?

Well,there is what they might want and what they will accept.
And in the accept department you are way ahead with latin women,particularly Colombianas.Yes appearance is still important,but its not the whole deal like it can be here.
There are lots of women willing to take much older guys.You just need to be carefull how they really feel about it,because it could bite you later.
Then there is the whole issue of how she will change if she comes here.I think if we were living in Colombia my wife would still be happy to have me.Or at least be trying to keep me around.She knows there is no opportunity there for guys or jobs.Her its alot different.So a change of attitude.
Also,go to some of the agency web sites and look at the pictures of couples who have married.I saw some pretty good looking women with some less than ordinary guys.
And let me differ with you that a woman can't be picky about appearance if she marries a guy 10-15 years older than her.I know some 40 something guys that look very good,married to twenty something women.
I guess I kind of like the " Don "idea.It gives alot more respect to an older guy.One of my latino friends used to call me Don Pedro before I even knew what it meant.When I found out I was more impressed.
