... in response to New Year's Eve in Cali, posted by gringuitonto on Dec 2, 2003

I've been in Cali twice on New Years.3 years ago we went to a party at the Pacifico Royale Hotel. It was expensive ,like $80 a person, and they didn't have too much going on,music, food noisemakers and champayne at midnight. But its was fun being with some friends. Not a place to go by yourself.
2 years ago we were at my in laws house in a strata 3 or 4 neighborhood, nice but not rich.At midnight everybody went out on the street, they were setting fireworks off in the street, the kids were having a ball.My in laws hadn't been there too long and didn't know alot of the neighbors, but we meet them that night. It was fun.Had a good friendly spirit about it.Again not something to do as a single guy.
Hell,I'm going to be there this year. What am I going to do?Try to find a party or get together with some people. Not a night for singles bars there I don't think.I could even go to the in laws but I'll pass on that.My wife told them when I was going to Cali and they wanted to pick me up at the airport. No ,got that covered and that would feel strange, but I will see them some time.Nice people,I don't really want to have to find a new set of in laws, just like I didn't want to have to find a new wife.It could feel strange with a new family, probably so much like the old one.Nice simple warm people.I always got alot of respect from them and even Rocio seemed to respect me more when we were there, like if her family thinks I'm a great guy maybe she should too.
The strangest New Years I ever had was in Honolulu in the 80's.We made the mistake of walking from the bar to the hotel about 11.50. people were throwing strings of firecrakers out of the hotels and they would be going off in your face.We got to our hotel at 12 and then they really blew up the town,There was a haze of smoke from fireworks hanging over the city the next morning.

Another strange new year was in the 70's.
My girl friend and I were skiing in north Lake Tahoe. We were tired and went to bed about 10.At 12 there were some fireworks,we woke up briefly, said guess its new years and went back to sleep.

Got some bad news for you. You are going to have a hard time finding somewhere to party on New Years eve. You are also going to have a very hard time getting any good Caleņa out of the house before midnight. So if your girl is from a strong family, you can forget about making love at the stroke of midnight.

You see, unlike the US, New Years eve is not a party holiday in Colombia. New Years day is. New Years eve is spent with the family in the house. At the stroke of midnight, yes, people often go out to reunite and party with their friends. But up untill midnight, no way.

This is time to be spent with the family. This revelation is gonna rain big time on Batman's parade and his planned New Years eve Bash. Not gonna happen buddy. If your listening Batman, you would be much much better served making it a Christmas day bash. Once again, unlike the USA, christmas is a party day in Colombia and is not spent with the family. Christmas is for party party party. It is christmas eve that is celebrated with the family.

You are right. New Year's eve is even more of a family holiday than Chirstmas eve. But who ever said the girls at Batman's party were going to be good little caleņas;-)

In defense of the Batman, if I recall wasn't his party a scheduled pool party in the afternoon?  Seems like the family activities are typically in the evening.  Might just find a good little caleņa by the pool afterall.

As far as other activities a night, aren't there still a couple of scheduled events at the feria?  Seems like I recall a concert sceduled for the 31st at night.

Cali Advisor is 100% correct.  We'll be spending Christmas and New Years Eve with the family.  We'll be partying hard on Christmas Day,(Cali Feria begins, Cabalgata).  As far as New Years Eve  is concerned, we just have a huge party with family that night.  -TNC

The problem is, New Years eve is not a party holiday in Colombia. It is spent with the family. At the stroke of midnight, people go out to reunite with their friends but up untill midnight is spent in the house with the family. I think Batman didnt have this "en cuenta" when he was hipping his new years eve bash. It should be a christmas day bash because unlike the USA, christmas is a party day in Colombia and is not spent with the family. It is christmas eve that is spent with the family.
