Congrats Jim!!
I am happy everything worked out so well. In a way, I agree with you that if you find love, sometimes you need to take the risk.
But there will be many cultural differences along with e her having to make the adjustment to the U.S and msiing her family. Take your time.
By the way, did you say she is only 19. That's very young. I am a bit younger than you and have dated a few girls around that age range the past few years. No matter how "mature" she may seem initially, most 19 years olds have a fantasy visions of love and marriage in their heads that is very appealing and flattering.
But after a few years of everyday reality, it wears off. I think I had read once the highest divorce rate were for people who had married under 25. Not saying it will happen to you, but please, again take your time.
If it was meant to be it will not go away. Even in latin America long courtships between couples is popular. If you would not marry an AW you have known for 2 months, why would you marry anyone else you have known for 2 months. My fiance and I have known each other for 2 years and are now going ahead with the marriage soon. There were incidents that showed me her maturity, and in the begining I thought she was perfect and she thought I was too.
But thank God those rose colored glasses came off and we realized we are both only human:) There are  times she has done things that I had to really check her on. It has happened the other way around also. In the begining a relationship is usually great. But it is not all lovey-dovey and you want to get past the lovey-dovey stage before you make that decision.that is why you should take the time to get to know each other better.
   Take care.

I was one of the ones that said you should have a backup plan. However, when you are willing to take a risk the payoff can be huge far exceeding anything you may have imagined. I'm glad things worked out so well. When will you return?
I have a situation very similiar to yours, I'll keep  you posted. Please accept my congratulations.

Hi Jimmy,

Like JSlo, I too was one of the posters that recommended a backup plan (and still would for someone going South).  It looks like you beat the odds though and it worked out very well for the two of you.  We are all glad to hear that you hit it off and will look forward to a more detailed trip report when time allows.  Returning back home must have been very difficult after meeting your new novia.  Hang in there.

Say, is there any chance of posting some photos?

All the best and congrats.

Pablo

Each and everyone of us here want or, if more fortunate, have already found that special someone. SOOO my warmest congratulations from your apparent move from the "searching" camp to the "found" camp!!! Many happy days for the two of you!

Hi

I did not really go the tourist route. I was met at the airport by the family. I was driven everywhere by her father. I did do a little driving in Pisco Peru.
I would not drive in Lima unless I really got used to it. Traffic was crazy but once you understand that HONK HONK means "I am coming through MOVE OUT OF THE WAY" then its OK.

I did not go to any clubs there. I did walk around Miraflores some but not too much. I really stayed busy with the family. We ate at the house most of the time.

I did get to do a lot of local type things. We went to several hige markets. One was a huge clothing market. If anyone ever goes to Lima pack light and buy clothes there. The huge clothing market has everything and its the same style and designs as here. There is also a factory outlet store for clothes in Miraflores that is cheap but crowded and huge piles of clothes. The main clothing market has everything and it is organized. There seems to be a huge market for everything.

I never saw another gringo at any of the markets outside Miraflores.

We did go bowling and walk around LarcoMar center. It is nice - just like the USA. Their is also a huge shopping mall thats just like in the US.

I do want to tell you guys about the resort we stayed at in Pisco. It is about 3 hours south of Lima on the coast. The Hotel Paracus is a great resort. I have been to Hawaii 7 times and I love Hotel Paracus if that tells you anything.
http://www.hotelparacas.com/

It was a great getaway. Its perfect for like a 2 day getaway. Go during the week and you will have it all to yourself. We had a great time and I have tons of Bikini pics to prove it Smiley

Overall I would never go to Lima just for a vacation or anything. The city itself really offers nothing for the seasoned traveler. But I cant wait to go back!!!!!!

If anyone has any specific questions I will answer them the best I can.

Te Amo Peru!

[This message has been edited by Red Clay]

I'm surprised your girl didn't take you to the Plaza de Armas. There ARE things there to interest the seasoned traveler. Only takes about half a day to see the Cathedral, the catacombs, and the torture chambers, etc. Also the gold museum is worth it, although there are rumors that much of it's artifacts have recently been determined to be fake. Heck, it's so weird, it's worth it anyway!

BTW, did you meet up with surfscum while you were there?

No, he blew me off. Probably afraid I would steal his girl. ;-)) Sounds like he had other things on his mind anyway. I'm working on a trip report and should have it up soon.
